Myspace ended a while ago- no surprise here as it is becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day. Facebook clearly beat it out and Twitter is the other big one in the market today.
It is likely just what you said they get a lot of impressions- especially repeat impressions from the same users.
I do not remember the first forum I joined- possibly the game maker forums? I used to do that when I was younger :p
Google hasn't updated PR in a while (at least not on a major scale) and I am not sure they are going to do too many big updates anymore. It seems like they are phasing out the public PR aspect...
Strategy one if you are trying to go this route: do not make it look like a made for adsense site ;)
You guys can find the T.O.S. and the rules on their site- that is probably the best thing to go over instead of just asking others for summaries since you will then know all the details from Google...
I have heard good things about it, but haven't looked into it too much. The way scrapebox is though, I would imagine this would also be very good, although you have to be careful with it after Panda.

They say it will affect rankings and it likely will in the short term as they try this out. It is too easily gamed though and will likely end up another dead Google project in time.
Targeted links will help more, but non-targeted links generally won't hurt either. Try to do some of both to make it more natural.
Try drip feeding them if you can so that they show over time and it seems more natural. There are some sites out there that will let you drip feed for free - linkalicious is one if I remember...
Always randomly mix the two- that way it is less trackable by Google since it appears more natural
