    Shared or VPS Hosting?

I want to move to new we host but can't figure out what plan to choose. I own a WordPress blog and I want to run that blog long term. Can you tell me what should I go with? Shared or VPS hosting?

Also its even better if you mention some reason why and why not?

    Thanks

VPS hosting will be more expensive than shared plans.

Virtually all shared unlimited plans have actual limits. These will be listed somewhere in the terms of service. If you host multiple sites that use CMSs you will eventually run into these limits of your unlimited plan. (I just had to put a planned forum on hold because of table limits in the database and am pushing the Inode limit on my shared account.)

If you are looking at managed VPS hosting you probably don't want their basic plan so look at the pricing a column or two to the right. The basic plan is there for a price point but seldom offers enough resources to be of value. Disc space will seldom be a problem, but look at memory allocation and bandwidth.

There are potential speed and security advantages with good VPS hosting. I recently got some phishing notifications from Google. I looked at my space both through my browser and FTP and could not see any problem so I had the hosting company run a scan on my account space. They found nothing on my space but the tech mentioned that from the format of the URL Google sent it could be that some other account on the server had been hacked and the notification was a false positive in my case.

A good VPS hosting account will cost at least 30$> I meant from well known providers with good support and fast servers with near zero downtime. Since you run a WP you need to make sure your provider is stable. You can find dirt cheap offers but no one can tell how long those providers will last.

Move to a VPS when your site can't be kept on a Shared hosting account because using too much server resources. Other wise its' no point of going for a VPS. Hostgator basic account is pretty soid if you only plan to run the WP site on it.

Wherever you host make sure you take backups properly. This is something you must do by your self can't relay on Hosting provides whatever they say.

Thanks both of you. But I heard there is a risk of using shared hosting. If a person is in shared hosting with same IP as mine and he/she done spamming activities and Google banned that IP address, it will affect my blog as well. Thats why I feel there is a risk in shared hosting and thinking about VPS. But I think in Hostgator business plan there is a dedicated IP where I will be risk free. So, shall I go through it?

if google banned the IP, that will be bad for your site. VPS will be the best choice when you need big resource. And you can use it for your ScraapeBox, rapidleech and VPN. there so many benefit when you have VPS. But don't forget about The Pareto principle....

I have to admit I don't know about Google banning IP addresses though they do ban web sites. Majority if webmasters use Shared hosting Some Hosting providers have thousands of shared hosting users. If Google ban IP addresses the we should have seen lot of screaming about it but have never heard of anyone complaining.

I think that the IP address issues have more to do with email and other places where various blacklists may be used. That would only affect mail originating from the web server, not email sent through Gmail, etc. It probably would not be a problem even sending mail from your local email client through the webmail system because the spam filters should be set up to look for the first 'received from' IP which should be the one assigned by your ISP. Some anti-spam software may add an alert if the mail passes through a suspect mail server, but I don't think most would block email on that basis.

    Post Re:

A VPS like a shared server also has one server only, but the software of the system divides it into several "virtual machines". Therefore though the server's total resources are still shared by the various websites being hosted but each such VPS gets their own allotment of RAM, disk space etc and operate completely independently using the allocated resources.

It's a balancing game, between cost and services. Speed and quality of connection will help your google rankings and keep people on your site longer. So having a fast website is important.

You need to figure out exactly what you use, and what you need. If you use up 20mb of data for your images, html, wordpress plugins and database content, finding a place that gives you 200GB of disk space isn't necessary. Find one that gives you 30mb. Don't go looking for what you "think" you need. The difference can be huge! And usually is. Capacity planning isn't easy, and it might take you awhile to figure out your true requirements.

You need to figure out how much ram your site is actually using. How much slower/faster could it be with a better database? If you've got a lot of traffic, you might need a VPS, but if you're got only a small amount of high value traffic, paying more for a shared server with good speed might be worth it. If you pay $1/month for hosting, you're site might not get the resources it needs, of course if your site makes only $3/month you'll want to keep it under that amount as well.

Don't under estimate the benefits of quality hosting, vs cheap bulk hosting. Unfortunately, skimpy shared hosts aren't all alike. Some you get what you pay for, super fast. Some you pay a premium for, but get nothing more than bulk hosting quality.

Just go with whatever is cheaper and fills your current needs. Shared should be good enough for you right now unless you get A LOT of traffic.

Always VPS over shared hosting, just find some affordable and reliable hosting and you won't be disappointed.

VPS gives you more freedom and flexibility. On VPS you have full root access and you can use whatever settings you want on your account whereas on a shared plan it is severely limited. With a VPS acc you can also create and sell hosting plans to other people. If you don't want too much headache go for a managed VPS hosting plan.
