Thread: What is the use of "Custom Canonical URL"?

I started using genesis framework on my blog and I need some help from you guys ...

What is the use of custom canonical url?

Everytime I publish a new post, I see the following (refer image) in theme SEO settings.

What is its use from SEO point of view and is it mandatory to fill in ?

Custom Canonical URL by dibunakan webmaster guidelines to prevent duplicate title .. that's all I know .. possible under me there is nothing more to know about this ..

When you have 2 urls that points to the same page then you may penalized by big G. To prevent this Canonical URLs are used.

You don't need to use custom canonical URL unless you have not fixed canonical URL for entire pages of your blog.

For us http://website.com and http://www.website.com seems to be same, but for Google, these are two totally different pages. So you have to choose one best URL preferably http://www.website.com (with WWW) and redirect/refer pages to this URL format and treat as one. For WordPress, All-In-One SEO Pack plugin can handle all of these.

You don't want to use different URLs which search engines treats as different site. So it's better to leave that option.

But I plan to use the default genesis seo, is it OK or should I shift to AIO SEO which in turns disables the genesis seo.

thesis and genesis framework offer good seo, but i prefer all in one seo... more portable and automated

WordPress also provides tag and category searches and these results are also treated are also treated as separate URLs by the search engines.

I am not familiar with the genesis framework, but the word custom would imply that you have control over the display URL although it may just be a fancy way of saying user friendly URLs. All In One SEO uses the post title as a user friendly URL.

I did not have experience working on genesis framework, I hope it is better than All in SEO. Can't genesis framework fix those canonical like all in seo plugin?
