meta Tag is Some How Backbone of Page if you will entitled it with keyword and <TITLE>.
Its really Important to have keyword in it !

if your image is meaningful than you should Use keywords that describe about img. this useful to optimize in Google image search too.

Yes Meta Tags is required for better Ranking and helpful to generate more traffic. Meta Tags are hidden HTML tags used to control your site description in the search engines
