No follow links are link that is not added to your link juice, Instead, no follow links are sources of additional traffic for your websites.
Nofollow links does not pass link credibility to the site but it is a good source for referral traffic.
It is a way to prevent people from spamming website to get backlinks. Having a No follow link tag will give no credit to that backlink created for that website. It is useful for sites that only wants others to provide quality content rather than spams of links.
link with nofollow tag like rel=nofollow is considered to be Nofollow and this is only for Google. No link juice considered for nofollow link during ranking criteria by Google. However for others SEs, link is link either it is dofollow or nofollow.
i think our buddies here have answered paddy's question, no need for me to explain.. but don't think no follow is useless link, when you do backlink it is good if have some small amount of no follow link rather depend solely on do follow link

I don't think its only for Google, I stand corrected though. Franberries is right though. It's better to have a mix of nofollow and dofollow, because if you only target dofollow, Google tends to take notice. If you have a balance, then your linkbuilding strategy looks more natural.

1. How does your search engine treat the No Follow attribute?
Google : The Googlebot does not follow that link.
Yahoo : If we find a link we make it available to our algorithms to find new content, whether it has a ‘no follow’ attribute or not. However, if the ‘no follow’ attribute is present, it means that no attribution is given to the target from the source of the link.
Now i know Yahoo a little bit curious than Google so how about Bing? Ask? AOL? and other SE

If a link is no follow that means it tells the crawler to not to follow that link and it removes the SEO value of the link.
I found this from the webmaster tools in google:
You can read the rest of the guide here: webmaster toolsIn general, we don't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if the URLs are submitted to Google in a Sitemap. Also, it's important to note that other search engines may handle nofollow in slightly different ways.
Good thing I researched it though. its a lot clearer to me now.

To an internet user No Follow and Do Follow links look and work the same. By definition a (hyper)link is clickable. An address that is not clickable is not a link but may still be pasted into the address bar, or if using the latest versions of FF can be opened through a right click context menu choice.no follow means your link is not active and people cannot click on it to access the webpage. But they can still copy it and paste it into the browser.
