Yep - but do it in context. I like to use articles to form such links. For example - lets say i have a TV site - i'll do a write-up on the main difference between lcd and plasma. I'll then find articles from authority sites on the subject like cnet reviews, etc and add a link as a reference in the article. this way it loooks totally natural to the SE's and adds max value to your site.

Linking to authority websites have very less impact on your rankings... Thought backlinks from authority websites helps in boosting up your rank to great extent.

This is completely natural because many times you have to place reference links in your content and this is completely natural in Google's eye.

Probably one of the best places to link to is wikipedia. Google has a lot of respect for them and you don't have to worry about them competing with you

Yes, you're absolutely right - some people started talking about backlinks instead.

There's an opinion that linking to authority websites improves your rankings, whereas linking to low-quality websites is an indication that you're a link farm to Google. Indeed, it's quite natural to provide your readers with a reference to some reputable resources - that brings value to them. Natural + Brings value to visitors = more respect in Google's eyes.

It's true. You can boost the reputation and standing of your site simply by linking content from your site to authority sites. If these authority sites see that you are linking to them, they may even link back to you and that could be a good way to boost your site. In blogs this works even better, because you can add related posts to the bottom of your post, and you can link to other blogs that have the same interests as you do and vice versa. Once again though, you need to be careful where you link to. Not every site is an authority site. If you link to bad sites, and that site is either penalized or worse, your site could be labeled "guilty by association" and could ruin your site reputation and make you start all over again.

    hi gill,

if you link back to authority website then Google will love your website.

you should have at least 5 - 6 link backs to authority website from your website & make them do-follow links.

    kindest,
    abhishek kundu

I always link my keyword to authority site, mainly Wikipedia. This is also one of various on-page requirements included on Wordpress plug-in such as WP Easy SEO and SEO Pressor. I make it no follow, anyway. I think do-follow/no-follow isn’t too affecting.

That's what you should not do in my opinion, at least not Wikipedia only. There is nothing bad with linking to Wikipedia, but Google knows how the game is played, so linking to other authorities as well or only other authority sites in the respective niche except Wikipedia is certainly the less obvious approach.

Hmm it probably helps but I doubt there's a huge difference as I have sites with and without it but of course there are many other factors involved as well.. haha

I have often wondered whether linking to authority sites helps. The general feeling seems to be that it is a good idea, so I will give it a try.

It can help somehow, but not all, but for me, high PR and low OBLs link will be the best, if it is related, it will be better.
