    PHP vs ASP.net

This is an everlasting debate and I couldn't find a topic about this here. Which do you use PHP or ASP.net ? Why do you like it and Which are the reasons make you think your choice is better than other one ?

I'm a big PHP fan. I learned ASP years ago while I was studying web development but never got it into my self. But I self studied PHP and have loved it since the first day.

When you compare PHP with ASP (old version), PHP was better without question but now with ASP.net I really don't know.

I associate ASP with Windows servers. I am unaware if there is a version available for Linux servers. PHP is used primarily on Linux servers, but there is a version available for Windows OS servers as well.

You can can run PHP on most of Server OS. It run fine on Windows OS based on windows platform. I have it in my deskop PC for years.

But also you can run ASP in Linux servers using the Mod called MONO. I'm not sure if it's good for industrial use but I think it works fine for isolated cases which needs it and if you run it on a VPS. If you are interested in it check this link. It's an open source project.

    Main Page - Mono

Well you can learn PHP within couple of weeks. It's every easy. Having a basic knowledge of php help you a lot when you want to edit those free scripts you find on various sites. w3schools.com has nice simple set of php tutorials. You don't even need to install PHP in your PC.

Download easyPHP and install it into a pen drive. You can use it anywhere you want.

The big problem of php is: You can mess it up easily by writing unsecure code. But yes, PHP wins when compared to ASP. Tho, I'm not sure if Ruby is even better than PHP. Let's find out

This can happen with any programming language or scripting language. Not just PHP. Things can get hairy if your code is not strong.

I don't know anything about Ruby at all.

I've recently started studying php. I love it IMO. From everything else I have studied, PHP wins everytime. I am busy learning about it because I want to create apps with it. and not web based apps, lol genuine apps.

A friend of mine recently revised his own PHP framework, which is now at version 2, and it allows for RAD. I've seen the framework in action and I cannot believe how awesome it really is. its powered by PHP, which is what motivated me to study it.

Then you must be studying PHP-GTK. I tried years ago but had to stop because you can't install GTK engine and PHP web server version in same OS together. Maybe things have change now.

I have GTK here yes, and I have another editor that apparently helps you create apps using php code without the need of a server, but as yet I have not installed them because, taking it one step at a time, I am learning the web dev side first so that I can become familiar with the code first. But it would be cool to see what I can come up with when I am ready to move to GTK. I downloaded the binaries as well as GTK itself, and the other app is called Roadsend.

I didn't know about this compiler. Wonder if this works along with Web Server version.

You can find it here Roadsend. From what I have read you can use the app with or without a server installed. I had a look at their FAQ's. I think you would use the php code as is in the compiler without needing to worry about anything else. Like I said, I have apache and mysql installed so I am not entirely sure what will happen after I install Roadsend and the GTK. I think GTK2 compatibility is still under development though.

To update, I have installed roadsend last night and its working. I had no issues with apache or mysql running at the same time, so its just to get GTK going. So far so good. I am one step closer to creating apps

I have not added GTK yet, still trying to figure out what to do with it, or I might have missed the installer. What i got was a list of examples and binary. I will sort it out today and let you know in the morning.
