Nope, but I have XAMPP running at the moment and Roadsend is installed and I have had no problem at all. It's been a little hectic recently, so I haven't been able to test much.

I did install latest PHP version and I have ended up with a big mess. Latest version of PHP doesn't works with Apache version they have given in their official site. We need a custom build for it. Anyway got all that sorted out but still there are problems in settings. Include files are not working so I need to find right configurations.

You could get XAMPP. it comes with PHP, MySQL and PHP prepacked. I had problems with setting it all up so that it could work because I had problems with the htdocs file. I uninstalled everything, removed php files, and just installed XAMPP, and it was all sorted out for me.

I have EasyPHP too. But I like to do it manually just to get the idea. It comes handy when you have un-managed VPS.

True. The only reason I used XAMPP was because I installed WP on a localhost for testing purposes . If not for that I probably would have stuck to my original configuration.

I have thought about setting up a Linux server locally for this very reason. I haven't gotten around to it yet, though. I did have an XAMPP install on a second computer at one time and FTPed files from my main work computer over my LAN.

Installing programs does not worry me so much. I have done most of my WP installs myself even with SimpleScripts one click installs available. I need more knowledge of server security and operation before an unmanaged VPS adventure.

That's a good idea if you want to learn it. I have an old P4 desktop machine which might be good for same purpose. Right now I have bunch of things to sort out in my windows Apache/php installation.

I am the same. I also associate ASP with Microsoft Windows based servers.

You can run ASP on some Linux servers, but it always scares me to think how well it might be implented if WINE on Linux is anything to go by.

For peace of mind I would stick with PHP.

At my workplace they block .asp as insecure. I think that is extremely funny since we are a dedicated Windows site. Mind you, they are overly paranoid, they also block Java applets and some Javascript stuff which is sandboxed and safe.

I have been using PHP for years and love it, got to watch out for the version differences in your code if you want to migrate it though. Same with developing on a local server for an online server.

WINE is not a Microsoft development but I agree that it is problematical and ASP is probably no much better. Some programmers do stuff because they can not because they should.
