ive already started exchanging links via the linkmarket website but this doesnt really drive traffic to the site...

Don't worry about PR and concentrate on Traffic.

I agree with jalanbk, do not worry about PR. PR does not impact rankings or traffic.
As far as improving traffic is concerned, you should target improving your website rankings by improving quality of website content. When I say quality of the content I mean it should be 100% unique, should include high search volume relevant keywords and should be informative. Once you have quality content, start promoting your website through link building activities such as guest posting, blog commenting, forum posting, social bookmarking etc. These activities will not only help your improve rankings but eventually help increase traffic.
