I'd say more competition in your niche, less relevant content (or duplicate content) according to google, too many affiliate links (?), poor page build...
It can be a lot of different reasons.

Keep adding valuable content and posts and build backlinks to more than just your homepage.

Are you guys even reading what he wrote? He said his indexed pages are dropping. THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PANDA UPDATES AND ESPECIALLY NOT COMPETITION. He didn't say rankings. Indexed pages don't drop for no reason.

I have a website with over 30,000 pages indexed in Google, over half of them are "duplicate" pages due to my CMS's dynamic content and session links. About two months ago, I went to Google Webmasters and told Google not to index any of those session links anymore, which amounted to over 100,000 pages that Google was crawling. Even two months later, my indexed pages are only slowing dropping down due to that.

In my experience, if you didn't do anything with your robots.txt and haven't been blocking anything, and your indexed pages have reduced that much, you have a penalty on your hands.

You can check if you have a penalty here, it may not work 100% correctly, but it probably only gives false negatives sometimes, which means if it says you don't have a penalty, you still may, but if it says you do, you definitely do. Use the second checker further down the page: Penalty checker | Google penalty

Yes. From my experience also, I agree with habbakuk. The penalty will be dropping the indexed pages, if Google suspects any black hat technique is applied to the website. You have to check with penalty checker and then post the result in this forum to get our support.

It can be a penalty and if it is you can see it in Google webmaster tools.

Also If you don't keep those pages updated once a while those pages might be deindex. It can happen. Google doesn't tell us about how they do it all so we have make sure content is regularly updated and unique. Also build back links to each page if you can.

Most of the time Google deindex a web page due to duplication issue. So make sure to have unique content within your site. Its better to check with Google webmaster tool for any red flag.

Are you sure if your website has a penalty Google will tell you about it via Google Webmasters? I'm not challenging the notion, just interested. Because from all the sources I've read from, including some of the most recent books written on SEO, they always say you have to determine and figure out yourself if your website has a penalty or not and what caused it, not that you can simply find out through Google Webmasters. And since they always have chapters dedicated to Google Webmasters, I would assume if you could find out if your website had a penalty this way, they would have mentioned it.

Everyone is experiencing the same problem. Many backlinks are simply not being indexed no matter what we do.

Except the OP and everyone else in this thread is not talking about backlinks being indexed. Neither are we talking about problems with pages being indexed, rather being de-indexed. There's a big difference.
