Thread: Stop Word Press comments

Can anyone advise how to stop WP comments as I am getting tons of spam.

As I recall that is under settings>discussion in my theme.

Some themes also have a commenting backdoor with images. If that is the case you will need to add a bit of code in the theme.

To disable comments from new posts

Settings >> Discussion >> uncheck "Allow people to post comments on new articles"

For old posts

Posts >> select them all and "Edit" under bulk actions and hit apply >> choose "do not allow" next to comments and hit update posts.

Also there is a plugin called Disable Comments which has lots features about this.

Also do you have Akismet on ? never let comments to auto approve. This can become a disaster.

Important is to know that if you allow comments on your wordpress site, and have any kind of captcher there, it will be allways hacked by time. New type of captchers are good only a specific time long, but the other site is not sleeping, trying to "hack" it allways! It is the same with the money Safe. It is all about time when they can hack you lock.

Wordpress already has a strong system of detecting spam. Akismet does a good job. The spam would not be approved until you have read those comments and manually approve them. Since your site is appearing in the higher positions, people are more likely to comment on it.

I find turning off comments on on all pages and posts is the most reliable way, the comments form just does not show, unlike if you un-tick the settings /discussions box.

Try going to Page or PostS all,
Tick top title box to tick all your pages/posts.
Turn bulk actions to edit and press apply.
In edit section under comments make it Do not allow. Apply/save.

Doing it this way removes the form from showing on the posts. You can do this individually for each page/post though.

yea that is true you are truly a wordpres user, also in his setting he can set it such that he does not allow comment

Wordpress provides AKISMET plugin . You can use it.

Akismet is all you need.

Here is a trick for you. Turn the spam into HAM. Edit the comment to take away any links and all other junk and then approve it. Google is keying on reader participation in their algo so you can use the diverse IP's of the spammers againgst them. Trust me this works. Just make sure the settings are not on auto approve. Good luckapprove!

jimmykak is 100% right. I have written the same message on other posts in IMT. I add one more step, just to make it "legal" (not that anyone will actually cause you trouble). In one of your Pages (not Posts, Pages) add words such as "All comments are subject to editing by the webmaster before approval."

i only use akismet, let akismet doing his job. everything will be OK

There’s no such thing as full-proof, 100% effective against spam. It might be, for a certain time frame. The best thing you can do against spam is to use akismet and to hold comments for moderation.
