Common method is setting up a site to with mailing list and offer something free so people would subscribe. What other methods we can use to collect email addresses and make a good mailing list ?

Not giving away something once. What's the reason for people to stay on your list then? To see you bombard them with sales offers? Send out useful content like video tutorials or PDF reports on the regular basis to your subscribers. Right on your landing page explain your visitors what kind of content they gonna be receiving via email if they opt in, video tutorials for example, how often you broadcast updates, which topics you cover, etc. It's crucial to filter the leads you collect. You don't want those that won't convert. People must know exactly what they're opting in for.

To get more leads:

Create a squeeze page out of a Facebook page, put all necessary graphics, videos, text and Aweber subscription form there, promote it through Facebook advertising.
Create an awesome newsworthy opt-in bait e-book, order a press release about it, pay for its distribution, get loads of leads.
Get leads thru forum marketing. Link forum signatures to your landing page.
Do ad swaps

You can start a blog and work on it to get good rank. After sometime you can allow guest bloggers to publish articles on your site. This will increase the size of your site and participation on your site. More and more users will start browsing your site and will leave comments. This way you can build the list of all guest bloggers and comment posters. You can also start to offer something for free to get more emails.
