    An ethical question, of sorts.

I've been working on a website for a while now, but I've been thinking.

I've been with the company for almost a year now, would my starting my own site make me look like I am not loyal to my work? The last thing I would want to happen is that I lose my job because I am working for other people at the same time. I do work through odesk yes, but I have for the last year, kept exclusive to the company I work for now, and I think they appreciate that I am doing that.

Would creating my own design site create conflict?

The answer is fairly easy. Whatever isn't restricted by your contract is allowed. I'd say that if you are not taking your employee customers and are not working on your own projects during office hours or using your company resources in any way (laptop, software, know-how...) then there is nothing unethical about it.

I see no ethical problem as long as there is not a conflict of interests. It could also be argued that your work on your site would be an advantage because it increases your knowledge and experience. That could be an advantage to your employer in your work on their site.

It could be beneficial to both, and as yet, I have no contract set up. I work from home, so I am in my own 'office'. Although I was given a laptop to work on because my desktop was giving me problems at the time. I just really love my job, and even though I design, do seo and IM work as well as general VA work, I don't want to do anything to jeopardize it. I work for some really great people, and I would hate to do anything to upset them. If it would be detrimental to the work I do, then I wouldn't continue with the sit, and just set up an art gallery, showcasing my art.

I agree with Riba and Wink.
As long as you don't work with your company customers and not doing your personal work in working hours I think you are OK,
also I think you can use company laptop for personal usage, but only in your free time, it is not exactly by the rules, but I think it is OK, because I wouldn't mind if you where my employee.
