Actually, with profile links you don't need to be active. One of the main cons of profile links is they might be short lived if you're on an active forum. Mods might clean out all inactive members. Another downside is that they could take a while to be indexed by Google. Many will argue that no link juice is passed on, but from my experience and 1000s of profile links, I can tell you that every time I create a group of profile links, I see movement.

They can be hit and miss with their longevity. You may get lucky and the links themselves might stay around for a long time.

the profile links can be indexed easily if you use 3rd party indexing tools (pinging function) But the bad thing as you said, when the admin once realized that you don't active at all, your links will deleted. But it takes sometimes, maybe 2-3 months or more, rely on how active admin are

To build the links manually then post on the dofollow forums, directory, social bookmarking sites. I personally believe that it is better to avoid any software tool, black hat SEO.

there is no wrong using software tools, you just need to use it the right and not the wrong way, by using the software it will cut off you time to 50% or more. For example if you want to send your link to directory, for one directory you need at least 5 minutes to fill in all the website details and send, but by using tools (such as IMT directory submission), you just need only 5 second to submission process due to you already fill in the website details at the first time
