This type of marketing is semi-ethical/unethical SEO in nature. It was also said that you may face penalties using such SEO but you'll not be banned. How it will be known if you're using Gray Hat marketing? And what would be the penalties one may face if he was caught?

The white Hat follows the rules.So, the methods are On page and Off page.The methods used in Off page can be blog posting, article posting, forum posting, social book marking, directory submission, press release submission.The on page methods can be adding title, meta tag, key words, headings, site map to the site.

The Black Hat methods are against the rules of the Google.So, the methods used for this can be key word stuffing, doorway pages, meta tag stuffing, invisible text, cloaking, article spinning, duplicate contents.

The Grey hat methods are the combination of the above two techniques.If you will use these methods, the the search engine can easily notice it.Its not easy to make the Google fool.In penalty it may ban your site for a limited period.Then there will be no value of your work.So, follow th ethical way to get the appropriate result.

Well, for grey hat techniques, the most obvious penalty is deindexing or huge drop in rankings.

Google discovers grey hat things in two ways,
- Using algorithms
- Spam report against your website

If Google's algorithm discover wrong things on your website you will be slapped with algorithmic penalty
In other case you will be slapped with manual penalty.

Using Gray Hat is equal to Black Hat some times so my advice is to avoid Gray Hat also.

Follow just White Hat so that you won't have any worry in future and your business would be true business and you can work on that confidently as well.

Grey Hat = White hat + Black hat, the method is good only if 80%White hat + 20%Black hat

Ya, grey hat is simply a middle ground between whit and blat hat and is really hard to determine because it means different things to different people.

Why to take risks?

Always do white hat for you money or main sites. You can apply grey hat methods for your 1st and 2nd tier links. and then for 3rd and fourth tier links, blast them with black hat methods. You will see results.

people that implement grey hat method want to rank fast and quick.. but eventually if caught by google you can banned fron their indexed.. i've experienced myself, from that, i learn, build a link constantly, SLOW but in the end STEADY

this is the link myth you will not be hurt if you use black hat

Gray hat SEO involves a mixture of the two. Someone in the gray will be using mostly white hat techniques while incorporating small amounts of black hat that the search engines might not penalize and usually don't ban for.

Grey hat is not about merging white and black hat techniques in your SEO strategy. Grey hat SEO is separate category, grey techniques are less ethical... e.g. keyword stuffing, keyword placement is advised but overdoing may lead to penalty

in my view there is no black, grey, or white seo

White hat can easily be white hat one day and black hat the next! That's basically the whole purpose of Google algorithm changes, they are defining new things that matter to them and which old things that they allowed are not going to get you in trouble. I think that the best SEO strategy is diversifying!! Because you may think you have a solid (white-hat) ranking one day and the next day your site is gone!
