I do believe that since Google went public their CFO has more power than their 'do no evil' motto, but this article is so anti-google that it sounds more like propaganda than sincere analysis. I suspect that the truth is a bit more moderate than this rant, but I would have to check the resources mentioned (and their connections) and also check for some other views before I formed a clear opinion on this subject.

It was reported by a blogger that an aid in one of the SOPA sponsor's office had stated in a phone interview that the senator favored censorship of the Internet. This has a ring of truth. This is the year for major elections in the States. Those in power would like to be able to silence the opposition. The Internet has growing power in the distribution of information. The main stream media seems to be in the pocket of those in power, but the Internet is currently largely beyond their control. The way to control the masses is to control the information to which they have access.

The recent problems of the upload sites were only indirectly related to SOPA/PIPA. These were done under existing laws, in reality emphasizing that the laws already in place have teeth. I suspect that the timing was such that there would be anti-piracy publicity that might make passage of the bills more acceptable.
