Now a days just joining the forum for adding your links in profiles is not a good way for building backlinks, but you should also participate in the discussions for creating many links through signatures. Also this in not a link farming.

Absolutely agree with you. Try find a forum that is relating with our sites and it can make our profile links look natural for Search Engines.

Actually profile link building means, put a link on profile page after sign up a forum or website. It is not link farming, but one of the proper way to create backlink. It helps your website to get rank on search engine.
Honesty is the best policy. If you can lead a honest life must you will be rewarded any of time in future for sure
