Link exchangers also use social networking sites

I see lots of invitation from different social networking sites and all are from link builders I think you can make great list of link exchange partners on social networking sites and it would help a lot in doing link exchange as well.

The reason it is bad is because when you do a link exchange there is many people who take you link off after few weeks second Evan thought the link to your site adds link juice it also takes away link juice because after recent panda update cool has been cracking down on these types of sites because they are like link farms. Also google does not like them and google easily finds with the google algorithm.

You can get by it by doing 3 way link exchanges . It gives you more juice and does not hurt your site as much.

    hi,
Link exchange is an opportunity you are giving to your competitor to drive away the traffic from your site therefore it suggested to avoid that, but sometimes it improves the quality of the page. so it is up to you, how you are using link exchange.

I do not think link exchange will work permanently.Panda update checks fr link forms and Google may soon come up with new algorithm for emphasizing the same. Moreover when the links are pointing towards a website following black hat techniques, it will bring penalty for your website.

I am against link exchange. Our Senior Member Anup has also explained in his post about how link exchange has affected his site PR. Even google is able to track down 3 way link exchange. So in my opinion, better to avoid a link exchange if you are serious with your business.

even though you will feel pity about someone who give the links.. there's no need to link back to them if Google can detect the exchange process

I get link exchange requests all the time for my higher PR sites.
It's from people with websites who've just started in a high competition market and have read somewhere in an old report that reciprocal links are good for SEO purposes.
I always check websites on their alexa and google ranking to make sure it gets LOTS of traffic...for services, products I'm considering to promote, etc..
ext time you get a link exchange request...check the website's reputation using SEO for firefox for example.

Also...it's typical that most webmasters who request a link exchange propose to put your link on some page that's not even indexed or several levels under the homepage.
    NOT good...

Or are using some software that shows you a page with your link at the top, but the link does not exist for visitors who do not enter via the link they sent in the email or spam comment. Usually these softwares put a cookie on your computer so that the link will be displayed if you return.

Often copying the link and pasting to the address bar will show the page without the link if you do that first. I have also seen cases where if you go to the home page you will find no way to get back to the offered page (a 'friends' page without a nav link to find it).

Put some effort into building backlinks using all those other strategies being explained here on this forum.

i agreed with you... link exchange is not the last choice ever, it can be ignored, lots of proven method without link exchange can be implemented, so don't be stress and assume link exchange is solely proven method

Not only that, but its frowned upon by Google. It goes against their TOS. And they penalize sites that implement these techniques as well.

Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results.
The rest can be read here: Webmaster tools
it also gives you ideas on how to improve your site and get results with out link exchanges.
