I have a new site that, so far, gets very few real visitors. It is an article directory site and some of the authors check on their articles published there. It has an Alexa rank today of 413,xxx. One of my sites is a small, tight niche site. It is listed on page one of Google, (first, second, and third places) for its primary keyword and gets 100 times the real traffic that the article site gets. Its Alexa rank is 7 million plus. A targeted link on the niche site would hold some value, while any link on the article directory would be next to worthless at this point.

Alexa rank depends almost entirely on visits by people using the Alexa toolbar. If the demographic that has interest in the content on your site is also likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed your Alexa rank will be good. If you get few visitors who have the toolbar installed your Alexa rank will be in the basement. People interested in IM are much more likely to have the Alexa toolbar. Probably something on the order of 90% of general Internet users have never even heard of Alexa, let alone installed their toolbar.

In other words, Alexa rank has little real value.
