Consistency is what matters. Decide which you prefer and use it. You should make an .htaccess rewrite rule so that all are directed to your preferred URL (rewrite www. to plain or plain to www).

I doubt if it would really have an affect.
yea, its has some effect. But once chosen, need to follow the same method. I prefer with www

IMT Website Submitter(Indexer)
with my sites it does not matter, goole translates to the same site with or without the www
Its up to you whether you want to do it with www version or non-www version of your website.
If webmasters are linking to your both versions of your websites that will result in backlink splitting. Also this splits your traffic as well.

Just choose any one of them as you like and stick to that... This way you can avoid split in back links...
this issue is actually more serious than you might expect. by backlinking www or no www you are actually splitting your backlinks into 2, google takes your sites as 2 different ones. I always backlink using the non www way and always set a redirect this way, search on google on how to do it. This should be done for everysite you create.
Search for 301 redirect

If you have cpanel hosting check in the domain section for a redirect wizard. It will easily handle the www/non-www redirect by writing to the .htaccess file..

not much imp. google counts all.
Yes, you are right, the point is link should be active, whether you are using www or http both can be used but links should be live.
Rebecca and Luke are correct.
I agree, just be consistent about it when you can. The Search Engines aren't totally dumb about it, even if you (foolishly) don't do a redirect. Juice flows towards the domain regardless... Will it make or break a site's success? Probably not. Just one piece of a very big puzzle...
Aside with being consistent with it and using 301 redirects, you can also use Google Webmasters to tell google which domain you prefer, with www or without, and if they find links that are contrary to that rule, they will read those links as whatever you set it to.

I just make it a rule to be consistent...for me, I will ALWAYS use www in my backlinks. ALWAYS! So no matter what google decides to do my backlinks are in the clear!
I guess the best way to do backlinks is to use whatever way your site is indexed in google. But you should add an redirect from the control panel to redirect incoming links that way too.
I also like my sites with www. But when I registered my domain I didnt add a redirect right away and google indexed me without www. Now I added the redirect and made some backlinks with www included. Google indexed the www version and deindexed the other. And my site started to climb up ranks thanks to the backlinks.
I don't know how many keystrokes I have saved myself when conducting link building on my own sites by not using www. trust me, it has probably delayed the onset of repetitive strain injury (RSI) to my hands by a couple of years at least by not typing www every time I add a link somewhere for my own sites :-)
But on my clients sites i generally build links with www unless asked otherwise.
When google considers PR it doesn't matter whether they are with or without www...
I agree. Consistency is the key.
Personally, I use without www because it saves a little space. Some places to build links, such as profiles and signatures limit the # of characters you use. If you use 3 links, that is 12 characters you saved. I know that is not a big deal, but I ran into a few times where this helped.
