Thread: Copying is stealing ?

I'll post this here since it's related to content creation. Do you believe copying content is stealing ? Things like autoblogging is all about it. My believe is copying without permission is stealing even if they link back to you.

Several days ago I saw this funny video about it,

I agree. Look, how would you feel if you spend a good few hours plugging away at a really great article, and the next thing you know, someone else is getting all the rewards of your hard work? If that happened to me, I can honestly tell you there would be serious problems. I don't mind quoting the occasional sentence or two, but if someone took my entire article or blog post and used it on their own site without my knowledge, I would be pretty peeved.

yes, copying digital media is a theft without a question. I also made a thread about this few hours before.

It's really important to stress it though. I mean especially after watching that video, many people still think its OK to take someone else's hard work and make a profit out of it. It's not fair on the person whose work has been used.

How hard the original writer writes in his/her blog and how easily the content thefts copy articles. So, what to say?

Yea, true. I am a writer of sorts, I mean I have blogs and articles out there as well, if I found that someone took one of my blog posts or articles, I'd be pretty upset. It takes me generally about 2 hours to write an article or blog post, and then I still plan it out before hand. I just don't believe that someone should ride a gravy train using my hard work. It's not fair.

I do actually agree with you all but don't they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....something like that!

Yea, they do say that, but I hear a lot of that in art circles as well. Many say that you aren't really good until someone takes your art and pretends its their own... I guess in the end it could boil down to individual feeling and whether or not someone would mind, but its still ethically wrong to take that kind of shortcut IMO. I mean who doesn't like a little flattery every now and then, but there are limits. Don't you agree?

Definitely its not fair. When I found somebody copying same article as mine then I immediately report it to Google right here: Google Help
The main annoying thing is that sometimes copied articles appears top of the Google search result higher than me.
I use copyscape to scan my articles.

Anup, if you think about it, If they can copy an article, then its very likely that they will know how to get the article in the top rankings, by any means necessary. What I fail to believe, is that these people seem to think that if they copy an article, the original writer won't see it....... It's as if they believe that we don't have the means to check if our articles are duplicated.

I found most of the auto blogs do such activities.

At the end of the day, be honest and write your own material!
