You may want to look into media.net. Some people I know use it and they report earnings similar, and sometimes higher, to Adsense.

I would say having tested them all that Chitika is great for pulling local business ads and some products depending on niche. Shopzilla is really great for product sites. CPC on there is quite good and they have lots of advertisors. Kontera and adbrite would be the fallback... If none of these workout, then check a display ad network like valueclick or vibrant media if you have the requisite cpm numbers. Don't forget the cj and linkshare cpc and cpa ads.
