this thread is old but since its been up I'll help giving advice since it might help imtalk.org members when it comes to getting traffic to their blogs.

Well based on my experience if you're starting a blog I suggest you do focus more on on-page optimization (that means high quality content, proper permalinks, html validated, fast page load, etc.)

For high quality content you can create your own topics (never ever duplicate other contents as google will blacklist your site) in regards to your site niche but since it will take a lot of time, there's an easy way to create high quality contents for your website its called "Content Curation". Basically what it means is you just have to share to your target audience what you've found on the internet (that's why internet called the "web"). You just need to copy a portion of an article of a famous blogs then organize them into a post in your blog where you include their site links too. of course if people find your site useful in a way where you link them to right directions and add your own description in your post most likely these audience will subscribe to your site too. Check Huffingtonpost and Mashable they curate like hell and they're so popular.

Of course after you're done with on-page SEO, you can now try to do a little off-page optimization like blog commenting, guest posting and advertising on social media sites.

By doing social media marketing, social bookmarking, classified ads and blog commenting, you can get huge traffic for your blog.

use social media tool bars in every content over there ..

do rss feed submission ...

and see magic slowly slowly but you will receive traffic which will come on regular flow ..
