Link building is the best way to generate leads towards the web site but for that you will have to keep following points in the mind :

Build link with the help of forum posting, blog commenting, web 2.0 submissions in the quality and high PR site according to your site theme
Post your portfolio with targeted keyword in other portfolio based site

Hire an SEO company or SEO consultant to work on your website and make sure their previous results must be great. By this point you will get reliability of that particular company.

Only quality links would work, so you should have understanding of quality links, otherwise it may give bad effect to your website.

What you need to do is build 4-6 web 2.0 sites for your KW and then link these to your main web site/sites. Then use the tools on here to get some links. THey are good. Nemanja does a great job with his free and paid programmes. Use them.

Build a miling list and be active in the places online where your market is active. Use forums and blogs to grab their attention and put a link to your website(s) in your signatures. SE traffic is definitely NOT the kind of traffic that will get you leads (a small percentage might...). It's mostly people who are looking for information...not to buy something. If you can get tons of traffic to your website through SEO...that's awesome ! Use this traffic to build your own mailing list. A free gift in exchange for their email address. Send them an email every week with useful info for them and after 7-10 messages you could easily sell your own service or product to them, because you're already got their full attention and because of the valuable info you've been giving them they'll believe you for what you tell them. Buid a relationship with your readers and mailing list and you'll get your leads.

Google has changed the algo today.So be careful to all link builders.Its really horrible.I think social networking is the best way now to generate traffic like facebook,twitter etc

To generate traffic social networks work well...if you do it right. However, we're talking about generating leads.
