Wordpress Tag and Category Pages in Sitemaps / Indexable?

Wondering what is the consensus out there about letting tag and category pages get indexed in G; ie, not blocking them in robot.txt.

Main cons I've read are they look like dupe content. Pros are your site seems bigger, ie more indexed pages.

For small sites, I usually let them all be indexed. But, for bigger sites, I'll exclude tag pages.

This has been viable for my uses and applications.

Wondering what everyone else has been doing...

    Hi Penguin,

It's not like that, that you only have your blogposts on the cat/tag page. You can also add unique content to those pages and this gives you the possibility to rank with that page for one particular keyword for which you have no optimized blogposts.

I'm running an online Tee-/Coffeshop and for that I use this to have a page that ranks for "black tea" for example.
Of course you can buy black tea in that shop but the optimization for those products are not for that key but going more for the long tail like "black tea from assam india".

    Best Regards, Costa

I think that having the canonical meta tag should take care of the duplicate content issue. That was Google's stated reason for introducing the tag, as I understand it. The SEO plugins add the tag.

I let G index my tags and categories. For the Images site I have, i tend to get some traffic through tag-pages.

I do not try and focus on tag pages to be index normally.
