Question Any Ideas On How To Stop Spam Commenting?

I have been getting thousands of spam comments on 1 of my Word Press sites. I changed the settings recently, so people cannot leave comments without registering, yet I still find 100 new comments and only 1 or 2 new users registered, how is that? and why my stats don't show the ones leaving those comments as visitors??

Nearly all spam comments are placed by software, not real visitors. Most of your visitor registrations are probably placed by software, as well. Akismet will catch most of the spam, but a few will still slip through. Moderating all comments prevents spam comments from being automatically posted and the few spam comments that slip past Akismet are not too big a problem to deal with.

Consider turning comments off for a week. The software may recognise sites it is unable to post to and self-remove you from its database.

I had a blogger site getting loads of spam comments, but after a week of comments turned off they have pretty much stopped completely.

Don't turn off spam comments. Use them to your advantage.

    1) put a notice somewhere that "all spam comments will be edited" If you use WordPress check the box that says comments will be published only after review

    2) check that there is not more than one comment from each IP

    3) delete just about everything the commenter wrote

    4) write your own comment using keywords you like.

    5) approve and publish the comment as you have edited it, using the original IP.

Done. You now have a useful comment from an IP different from yours.

Simply turn off the comments for certain time and keep the comment in moderation sot that they won't be live instantly. This will reduce in receiving more comments.

Great idea, thanks I think this would work well on blogs that should appear socially active

You can disable all comments with a FREE WP plugin downloaded from WP here: WordPress › Disable Comments WordPress Plugins.

BUT as mentioned above, it is better to EDIT the comments to your benefit. You can simply slow them all down by using a combination of plugins. I use SpyderSpanker which eliminates countries that I don't need traffic from, IP's that attempt to hack my site, IP's from the Honeypot Project, IP's that get through all of my other filters, and its delivers 408 error code to these blocked IP's so that they will end up removing my sites from their lists.

You can achieve some of this from free plugins. Here is a list of the FREE plugins from my website: SpyderSpanker Replacement (Kind of…with Free Plugins)

I also think that latest plugins are best, or you can check the comments from moderation queue. And if is better to attach a no spam warning if you will do this most of the spammers will step back. Apart from this someone suggested about captcha , I don't think any captcha can stop manual spam.

I see very little manual spam commenting, but the serious spam bot user will also have a captcha buster.
