On all of my blogs, coments are closed by default, so I can't help you with that matter.
It will be best if you make a split test.
Take 2-3 posts and close comments and monitor them along with the 2-3 posts with comments allowed

aaaaaaaaaaaaah Problem fixed... now I can get 10000000000000000000000 comments in 1 post... doesnt matter...
I created a tapped comment box.
On every post page you see 10 of the newest comments... and the other comments are on comment page navi site 2 and 3, 4, 5....
and site 2, 3, 4... have other permalinks...
I think its a safety way...
I used the Wordpress Plugin: WP-CommentNavi
Great bunny! I think its better if you turn your blog to No-Follow. Comment doesn't matter. For example, I have got over 90 comment in these post: Releasing Platinum Blogger Template | Hack Tutors
or
50 DoFollow Blogs to Increase your Page Rank | Hack Tutors
Not only these, there are many pages with lots of comments! And I have PR 3 for my homepage
Hello there.
yeah. Thats right... many external links at comments can destroy your pagerank.
So I need a plugin to set all comments to nofollow...
I hope I get no more spam comments with thousands of links
WordPress defaults to nofollow, you need a plugin to make links dofollow.

hmmm dont know that the default is nofollow... Ived checked all links at comments and they are dofollow...
thats also why people spam my comments full with links. Maybe my domain is in a dofollow blog list
It may be that one of the plugins that you have installed makes for dofollow links.
I have activated Akismet and I moderate comments. I check the ones that are not flagged as spam and, if I have time, look through those that are flagged for real comments. Otherwise I just hit the empty spam button. It is seldom that there is a real comment in the spam folder, but some of the more alert users of the comment spamming software can sometimes make a hit and produce a comment that sounds real if they make a good keyword list. I probably allow too many trackbacks, but I do see some traffic as a result.
Most of the link-list comments are produced by auto-commenting (comment spamming) software. These are not even real visitors to your page. If you look at your server traffic log you will see that many of the comments are posted without even opening the page. The server log will have only two or three calls listed. If the page is opened there will be calls for any images, the style sheet, your favicon, and any scripts at the very least.

yea, it can. change the settings to Automatically close comments within 1 week or 5 days. Then you won't get that much comments. If you are manually approving comments, you can always delete what u don't like . But I saw some sites with more than 300 comments per post, but they still have PR6

yes, they are bad they make your blog look bad and load slow . It also lowers your pr.
1000,000 can destroy a forum like DP. :P
And 100,000 can destroy a unpopular blog/forum.
