Both on-page optimization and off-page optimization are very much important for getting your domain in the top of SERP.

i think 60% onpage and 40% off-page SEO does matter..

my opinion both, but offpage could filter you out ->pinguin and if not then the on page can do ->panda

According to me, both activities are essential from business point of view. In on-page optimization, we can make our website search engine friendly where as in off page optimization, we can promote our website to get better rank and position over major search engines to increase our online business. So both on page and off optimization have equal value from SEO point of view.

I can't believe people chose both. They're missing the both big time, no wonder only a 1% get top rankings.

We need to focus on both On & Off-page SEO..Because both are essential to promote your business into internet marketing.

both, more on the on-page these days, but there the off page factors are very important too, they have just changed a lot in recent times, hint.. don't over do it..

Both of couse but before you going after off-page factors you need to make sure you have completely done all on-page SEO.

What do you mean?

Definitely both. But I feel something weird about their weightage. I think it varies from niche to niche, condition to condition, site to site. So, both parties who prefer on over the other and vice versa, may be right. Some sites are influenced more by on-page factors, others by off-page. In terms the simile of food and water used above by @gameswala, though both are necessary but different chemistry of body may require one more than the other. I think this is the same with Google. But this is only a hypothesis, and you're encouraged to experiment on different sites or pages yourself.

Both are essential for SEO but the main thing is OnPage. Overall my decision is 70% OnPage and 30% OffPage
