It can, if you use a keyword in your alt tags. If you host your pics on a site like flickr and then link them to your site, it can also help. Flickr is just really finicky, because in their TOS they state that if you are going to be using the site for promotional reasons, they may close your account without further notice, so you would need to be careful of that. Pinterest is also another way, you can have a "pin" on images in your site, and visitors (or yourself) can then pin the image. (IMHO anyway )

Make use of image in on page optimization is the best thing because it will drive traffic from the image search but before using the images in the webpage does proper optimization of image with the help of considering these points such as size, name, use of ALT tag etc.

I agree using images is a great idea. Be sure to put your key word, or subject of your article or post in the alt tag. Another reason images rock is Google also indexs them with your link. You can get some good traffic from images. Pin your images for more backlinks, and traffic.
Sure you can use image on website but don't forget to insert alt tag on it. You can even implement some tricks there like adding keyword on alt tags but becareful for keyword stuffing.
It helps a lot for on page optimization. Many traffic to one of my sites came from image in the posts. Of course, we have to add alt tag on it.
Yes, it does help provided you use your keywords in the alt tags. Apart from that, it just gives your article a reader friendlier look, doesn't it? Since it does no harm, I normally try to put in one/two pictures for every post that I do.
I find that having an image is a necessity for every post.
The posts rank higher, users spend more time on the page and cpc for ads is higher.
Another thing that really helps is to embed relevant videos from youtube. Google loves youtube
from what i have read, using image on a post page is a good idea. But don't forget to rename our image with our keyword, and using alt tags
