    Depends on the search term.

If you use the Google Keyword Tool you will be able to tell exactly how many users search for your preferred keyword / term.

To know this, you have to step into your user's shoe.
I would suggest you to insert both long tail and short tail keywords in your campaign.

It has been observed that a buyer usually use long tail keyword for specific research. So if you want to generate more leads, you should focus on long tail keywords.

Short-tail keywords are more obvious, thus they are more searched for, and more competitive. Example - "women's shoes" - that's quite a general query, isn't it? It means that you'll have to work harder on ranking high for this keyword and the traffic attracted won't always be your targeted one, if you sell cheap gucci shoes only.

Do you see the point? Long-tail keywords have lots of hidden capabilities, to name a few:
    1. Low competition
    2. Targeted traffic
    3. They are easier to optimize for.

Generally long tail keyword having at least 3 key phrases is used by the users. And for the seo point of view, these type of keywords have less competition and high conversion rate with compared to 1 word keyword.

I would research both types, I use both for my clients and they work when used in conjunction with each other. Play about with them

long tail keywords are easier to rank but a good keyword would point you to the right direction on whether you need to use long tail or short. It depends what your site is about and how it would rank with that particular term. Just experiment.

After a few years of doing SEO, and getting my websites optimized for long-tailed keywords, I discovered two things.

Long-tailed keywords are only worth anything if you can obtain top 3 rankings for it and KEEP it. Most long-tailed keywords brought me so little traffic it was a waste of time building backlinks for them. The ones that did make it however, continue to be a steady supply of traffic, and I have kept 1st place on Google for them for over a year.

On the other hand, I think focusing on long-tailed keywords too much is nothing but lazy, because you think you can obtain results faster. Yes you can, and you also suffer from it by getting much less traffic. I say, try your damned best to get as high rankings as you can for the most competitive keywords in your niche, and spend a bit of time building up long-tailed keywords.

After the Google Panda updates, rankings change much more frequently, and my rankings for my competitive keywords change almost every day by a few ranking places. But my long-tailed keywords are stable. My competitive keywords require constant strengthening by more backlinks whereas my long-tailed keywords don't need anything and I can forget about them.

Bottom line: do both. For a new website, I suggest working mainly on 1-2 long-tailed keywords and get TOP rankings for them so you can start bringing in some traffic at first, and then move onto more competitive keywords.

Long tail keywords (up to max 4 words) DO work best nowadays, but if your content is crappy or just a few articles thrown together...google won't give you any preference.
It doesn't work anymore to just market your keywords. On site SEO is just as important.

I've managed to increse ranking (and even PR2 on a salespage...) by composing content carefully with my main 6-word phrase...

Of course one word keywords receive a lot more traffic, but by choosing the right long tail you get targeted traffic. Also it is a lot easier to rank for long tail and one word. You have to think efficiently. Pick a phrase that has lowest competition and satisfying number of exact searches. You need a keyword that will give you a lot of buck for the amount of work you put in.

long tail keyword have less searcher than single keyword but long tail keyword have more value than single keyword like:
    low competition
    targeted visitor/traffic
    less effort to optimize

if you want to get high conversion, use long tail keyword

i think it depends on how you competitors you have. they is no guarantee that ever long tail keywords goes jump on top by adding some context ,ping, back-link. etc. whether you choose long or short tail keywords but the main impact is how deadly you competitors you have and from where they get authority back-link. long tail keyword got target traffic but small gets lots of traffic. one last things SEO is HUGE...

Although it is easy to rank for them, and some get okay amounts of searches, MOST long tail keywords are never searched for again, and are unique!
It does not make sense to target a search that gets 1 search.

Think you should take a basic course on SEO to understand the basic principles of keyword research.

We have a lot of pages that just rank naturally for 4+ word keywords, but obviously as others mentioned there is a lot more traffic when you go for short, high competition keywords

If you want targeted traffic it's better to go for longer tail keywords. If you're looking for something specific on google yourself you're also using longer search strings.
For example if you'd be looking for a credit card and you ned help finding the right one for you, it's most likely you'll search for "best credit cards with low interest" for example.

This is best for subniches, but this way it's easier to build an email list for example and it will be easier to promote all kind of offers or CPA sites to your list.
