Approach to Niche and Keyword Research

There are many posts, reviews, write-ups on keyword/niche research available. Today i thought i'd share the method that has worked for me.

Firstly i'll look at the following places to try and look for new and hot niches

Google Trends
Alexa
Amazon Hot Products
Ebay top sellers (with ebay pulse)
Shopping.com

When i find something i like or may be hot i try and gauge the following:

- Interest in the niche! Are there enough people interested in this niche to realistically achieve my goal of 150+ visitors a day to my blog/website.
- Monetization: Are there affiliate programs that can monetize my blog/website in this niche?
- Content: Is there enough content sources available to help me fill 4-5 different categories in this niche.
- Uniqueness: Can i learn enough about the niche to help me dig deeper and find smaller nicjes that are not promote by major retailers?

Having satisfied the above questions i'll then look at Keywords for the niche and make sure i can meet the following

-Primary Keyowrd - criteria: Using exact match statistics, i'll look for niche keywords that have at least 1000 monthly searches
- Related Base Keyowrds - these are the words that are ideal in helping to populate the categories we decide on. I want at least 4-5 of related keywords.
- I'll try and keep The overall blog/website keyword list should be under 3000 keywords. Optimally i would like a list of around 400 keywords for a good quality site.

Thats all - like i said this is the approach i've been taking when looking for a niche and keyowrds to get into. It's been a good guide to follow andhas helped identify some nice niches.

For me personally i'm more of a general site builder (big niches) but this method helped me rethink how i approach blog/site building.

I always use adwords for keyword research because it gives much better idea about searches and competition but as you mentioned the other tools for it are not bad option to rely.

That pretty much summarizes the whole process.
