    What are your views on Hyphenated Domains?

    From many people I heard that domain names that contain hyphens in between them are not likely to be ranked well in the SERP's.

    How far is this true?

    Please advise me regarding this issue.

    Fact: when you search something in SEs you will find less hyphenated domains in the TOP10 than non-hyphenated.
    Anyway if you are doing everything well you can get TOP10 rank with hyphenated domains as well.

    But in my opinion the non-hyphenated always better.

    I agree with your point "if you are doing everything well you can get TOP10 rank with hyphenated domains as well".

    Thanks for your views on hyphenated domains.

    We would never know what Google has in its algorithm. While ago Mat Cutt told they would be doing few algo change about to sort the different between brand domains and domains with keywords. Also there was another video he was saying they have ways to decide if a tld is spammy of not.

    They probably have some parameters to figure this out,

    * hypens / none hypens
    * Number of hypens
    * Genertic domain or Brand domain
    * the TLD

    with those they probbly also check things like,

    * Content
    * Overoptimization
    * Keyword density
    * How many out bound links
    * Inter linking
    * Dynamic user activity like user commenting

    and many more things together. If we try to see through Googles eyes even we can notice what would look spammy. Not just a hypen in domain. But there are over 2 hypens we all those these are just long tail keyword phrases. And we don't use those to develop brand names.

    You might right.
    But hyphens are not only used in domains what spammy in my opinion.
    What if I had a business and all the domains are registered for my main activity. Then I want to use a hyphenated domains because our visitors remember easier than the company name domain.

    Stay away from them. Instead pick a letter to go at the end of the domain. e.g. www.easilyloseweightz.com is better than Easily Lose Weight | Get to lose weight easily with the information found in this site

    This has been proven to work post panda

    The basic function of Hyphenated domain was to target the Exact match keywords. But with recent Google updates, this trend may not be that effective.

    that's a wrong move, these domain are hard to remember and confusing and it's not search engine friendly, many say even in blogger or tumbler use of hyphens is waste of time,

    Just like you I have also heard that domain names that have hyphens are prone to not be indexed and rank on top 10 rank. But I do not know if it is true. Because I am actually doing seo for this type of domain. I do hope that it is not the case for not being rank on top 10.

    Yes it is possible to rank a hyphenated domain to top 10 positions ... (But its quite hard ranking it)

    Kindly verify yourself for the domain: SEO-hacker.com using keywords "link building techniques", "seo philippines" and "content strategy guide"

    But wait before you plan to buy a hyphenated domain, read this - Hyphens in URLs: Good or Bad for SEO? | Dave Cain

    Thanks

    I think this depends on the purpose and how unique your content will be. Just like the example above. SEO-Hacker.com, it's a hyphenated domain but ranks well in search engines.

    Without reading the Cain post let me point out that the reason that people usually buy hyphenated domain names is because the non-hyphenated name is not available. That probably means that there are .com, .net, .org, and maybe at least a .info if not a few of the other TDLs sites already trying to use that keyword phrase. In other words, there are sites in the niche being promoted by people that are at least somewhat SEO aware. These sites probably have age on their side and possibly even some strong content and a good backlink profile. There is some real competition in the niche. Part of determining a good keyword or niche to go after is evaluating the real strength of the competition. Some keywords that look like they have low competition in the keyword tools are really well serviced on the web and ranking those keywords may be more difficult than it would seem from the unevaluated data.
