If you are looking for a forum about web hosting then WHT or webhostingtalk.com is the biggest one. Specially when you are in the market for a VPS or Dedi. They have all big boys in this field there and great offers too.

WHT is the best place learn about VPS and dedicated severs. I learn everything I know about VPS from there and still learning a great deal. Sometimes you get better result by posting problems there than asking from your web hosting providers support.

This only applies to SEO type of hosting where IPs are sold in packs, like 25 different A, B and C Class IPs...

Not too many providers have class A networks, mainly because a class A network has 16 million IPs. Arin started getting people to justify their need for that many IP's and forcing people to give them back if they couldn't. Really, unless you go to different IP's, all the reverse DNS and Arin information will point to the same company. So you might have completely different looking IP's that point right back to the same person/location. GEO ip's can also tell you exactly where an IP is from. It's better than nothing, but it's not likely you're completely fooling google. Google knows through GEO ip's where each IP is located, and through Arin who owns those IP's. The other issue is that google knows what IP's are servers and what IP's belong to telecoms (home users). So if you're pinging/submitting things to google as a "home user" from a server, google knows you're faking it. Whether they do anything with that information is another thing all together.

Dedicated servers are far better than VPS in general, but in general people don't fully understand the power of a VPS either, or what they actually require to run their site. Often times they simply need to modify their code a bit to gain the speed necessary, or tweak a database call. It's very easy to change just a couple of words in a mysql statement and go from a query that takes 2 minutes to one that takes .02 seconds! Join a to b instead of of join b to a! Sometimes that is all it takes.

Virtual Private Servers are simply multiple servers that run on a single server. Now the trick here is HOW many are they running on a server, and how big is that server. If they take an 8 core xeon 3.3ghz server and put 64 virtual servers on it, you're pretty much assured to get NO resources from this setup. If someone else is selling a VPS on a 2 core 2ghz machine, and only selling 2 virtual servers per machine, you're probably going to have WAY more power. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to tell what you're going to get. And unfortunately, sometimes you're the unlucky guy to sharing a machine with a SUPER hog, who maxes out everything he possible can on his VPS, which actually hurts your performance in most cases! Ugh!

One thing I've learned is don't look for a service that offers you unlimited everything, or 5000tb of bandwidth. Unless you're streaming music/video from your server, you're not likely going to use that much bandwidth up. A good sized site will use a few hundred megs per month. You don't need 2tb of disk space either, all of your material probably will take up only a few hundred megabytes as well, even all your database information. Of course there are some exceptions, but in general you don't need it. Take a product that has limits on it, and when you hit those limits, upgrade, or find a new provider. Basically, don't look for an all you can eat place if you're only looking to have an apple for dinner. Find a place that sells a single apple, even if it's the same price, you'll likely get a better apple than at the all you can eat place. You get what you pay for

I'm totally agree with the last paragraph of your post. Those unlimited features mean nothing if there are frequent downtimes, low speed and lack of support. When I choose a shared account or VPS apart from the price (everyone has think about the price) These 3 are the main things I consider.

About VPS, well yes a dedi would be great if you can afford but not everyone can spend money for them. Specailly if you don't have any knowledge of how to run a server. Quality, managed server cost a lot. Even with VPS thought you are not going to know how many nodes will be in the real server but you will know its good for you or not.

For example my have a close friend who is crazy about drawing Manga. So I run a forum about Manga Artists with my friend. She is all happy to pay expenses so we haven't put ads so no revenue. It hadn't last long in average shared hosting account but Godaddy basic shared hosting package could hold it for year. So finally even they couldn't hold it so they ask us to pack our things or upgrade to one of their VPS packages. So we moved it to one of the best VPS providers in market. It cost as 50$ per month but support is superb and uptime and speed is second to none. They told us they would add upto 20 nodoes to a server but it doesn't matter to us since as far as it doesn't effect our operations nothing to worry. Also you are not going to find a this quality dedi for 50 bucks.

I use different class A, B and C IPs for my network from one hosting company,
they have different servers across the world, so geo location is well cover there...

It really depends about the price, but some decent SEO hosting with different class C IPs you can find from $2 per IP to $10 per IP...
I found one SEO hosting (can't remember the name) which offers different A class IPs for $5 per IP, but very low on resources per IP...

Now if you have 10 sites and you host them in different hosting providers then it's difficult for Google to find out if all sites belongs to same person. Now I don't know if we should call this black hat or white hat but this is what majority of web masters do IMO.
I want to say thanks for your reply to clear my mind. Actually i was going to buy hostgator unlimited account for some of my sites hosted on different accounts and on different servers. Rather to shift my all sites on one hostgator account, i will give much preference to upgrade them as they are all from different IPs.

Thanks bluearrow for stopping me to make a biggggggger biggggger mistake.

You can welcome. But make sure you have good solid hosting account for your main web sites. Smaller sites you can spread on smaller and cheaper shared hosting accounts. Even there are good free hosting services where you can keep one of 2 smaller sites.

But if you plan to run a forum then make sure you have Godaddy or Hostgator basic shared plan at least. Most of small shared hosting providers have hard time handling scripts like forums.

Agreed. We must never take risks while hosting our main websites.
