You are kidding me ! You don't anything about VPS hosting ?

    VPS = Virtual Private Server

Means you get your own virtual server for your sites.

Hmm I didn't know that. or I think I have read it and totally forgotten. I have a long way to go before taking a dedicated server. Right now VPS are more than enough for me.

@bluearrow: Honestly I also didn't know about the VPS. Thanx for narrating the abbreviation. I do have two websites up and running but I don't know myself if they are VPS or not? By the way, what do the normal hostings provide?

Most, if not all, value hosting is on what is known as shared server space. The resources of the server (disc space, memory, in/out, and CPU) are divided between the various hosting spaces on the server.

A VPS runs a separate instance of server software in a virtual machine for each hosting space. The in/out is still shared, but a portion of the CPU and memory are dedicated to that virtual machine. As long as the in/out are adequate sites on a VPS are more likely to be faster and provide a better user experience. The cost for VPS hosting is higher than for shared hosting.

The step up from VPS hosting is a dedicated server. With a dedi box all of the resources are available all of the time. Of course, the expense is greater still.

For both VPS and dedicated hosting there is a range of expense depending on the resources and services required. The trick with all hosting is to buy enough so that you have reliable service through your peek traffic times. For many sites good shared hosting is enough. If the user experience is not good through your peek traffic times it is time to consider better hosting.

I think Wink0r did a good detailed explain. There are so many types of web hosting but most of those can be narrow down to 4 as to account types,

Shared Hosting accounts/ Reseller hosting accounts / VPS Hosting accounts / Dedicated Hosting accounts.

Shared hosting packages are what you see commonly. If a hosting package is specifically told as reseller, vps or dedi then usually its a shared account.

Reseller is just a control account for bunch of shared hosting accounts. Usually use cPanel's WHM to managed everything. or whatever WHM comes with other control panels

VPS usually more expensive but you get Lot more resources. This is where you head when your web websites grow too big for shared hosting. with VPS hosting you get your own quota of RAM and Disk pace. There are 2 types of VPS managed and un-managed. Un-managed VPS are cheaper but this mean you are just getting empty virtual PC. You need to inatall all the software it needs. Usually installing OS is a one click process but then you need to Install a control panel and set security for your sever. You don't get any support for anything except for hardware related problems. With Managed Hosting you don't need to do much and provider do all the installing and will help you with anything just like with shared hosting. But usually 2x more expensive. I think it's impossible to find a managed VPS with cPanel for less than $20 per month.

Dedicated servers is the next thing to come. You need a dedi only when your sites because really huge. Mostly forums and Social networking sites which usually stay active 24/7 use a Dedi like imTalk forum. I don't know much about dedis and maybe someone who uses can give insight info about those.

Although we have seen significant improvements in performance the move to the dedicated server was not dictated by available resources. There are hardware security appliances, basically sophisticated hardware firewalls, that can be used with a dedicated server but are unavailable for a VPS because of the shared I/O. As a bonus to using the hardware the resources that would be consumed if something not as good were done in software then become available to the server.

As far as dedicated servers you have the same managed and un-managed options plus the option of Co-location. CoLo hosting provides the rack space along with power, cooling, and I/O for a server that you own. You can purchase a server that suits your needs, set it up and deliver it to them. They will plug it in and turn it on for you, but little beyond that without additional charges.

There is really nothing magical about a server. The actual web server is just a software package that runs on a computer. The development packages, like XAMPP are really full blown web server packages. They lack some security features because they are not intended to be hooked directly to the internet, but they could be hooked to the internet and act as a web server. It is against the terms of service of most ISPs to serve to the web over their connections.

There are specialized operating systems for servers, but these are primarily just optimizations of the OS for server applications. Computers that are built as servers are also optimized for the specialized task. They often have dual power supplies and often incorporate raid disc arrays. Neither the server OS or hardware enhancements are requirements to run server software. They just improve the efficiency and reliability of the server.

@bluearrow - if we're not careful we will have co-authored an eBook on this subject soon.

Thank you winkor for the detailed explanation. I now understand that I am not using any of the facility but rather the shared services. But things are working finr for me right now as I don't have thousands of viewers every single day. Once i get the target of getting atleast 1k viewers on a daily basis, I think it would be sensible to opt for a VPS.

    ---------- Post added 07-08-2013 at 02:28 PM ----------

@bluearrow and winkor: I think you should co author an ebook. It would be very useful for people like me because we don't know this subject in detail and have to believe what others are saying.

Have you considered getting one dedicated and splitting it into vps's for your several sites? Solus or Hypervm is very effective in managing them

Not really. Do what my VPS in different locations. I don't a purpose for going all trouble getting Dedi and plit it into several. mostly importantly 3 different locations and providers means all my sites won't be down or in trouble if something happens.
