Thread: Have a question about a wysiwyg html editor

I never used it but I'm told KompoZer - Easy web authoring is the easiest wysiwyg html editor around. Has anyone here used it?

NVu, its predecessor, and KompoZer are the only web authoring tools that I have used, so I can't really compare it to other available options. KompoZer does write good, standards compliant code. There is an active user group forum at: wysifauthoring.informe.com/forum/. The help section was originally produced for NVu and not updated, but there is a very good User's Guide produced by a forum member, Mr. Charles Cooke that can be found at: charlescooke.me.uk/web/index.html. There is somewhat of a quick start guide tutorial produced by another forum member known as gregtutor that can be found at: gregtutor.plus.com/webdesign/index.html.

For Windows users the best version is still the 0.7.10 version. For Mac and Linux users the best choice is the proper flavor of the 0.8 version. KompoZer is under active development, but it is basically a one man project. Since it is an open source software he works on it between other paying work.

One of the strengths of KompoZer is the wizard based css editor. It is available for inline styles as well as internal and external stylesheets. KompoZer writes good code for both html and css.

The built in publish function, a leftover from NVu, is buggy so it is recommended to use a stand alone FTP client to transfer files. To use the 0.7 version with php files requires the addition of the handcoder extension.

The template function does not update pages based on changes to the template. It basically just stores a page with a different file extension. Most people that are building multipage sites use the Master Page approach described in gregtutor's material.

I use WordPress for blogs, the ArticleMS script for article sites and content 2.0 sections added to sites. Static pages I build in KompoZer. I also use KompoZer to produce inline style code if I don't immediately recall the syntax for inclusion in WordPress blogs or on sites like Squidoo that allow inline styles.

KompoZer is not DreamWeaver or whatever the current high priced spread, but it is a very usable editor. If you want to learn some html and css it is also a very good learning tool.
