One site can have multiple urls simply create this with your host. Your ranking on your old url will not transfer to your new url although I would check google webmaster tools as I think there is an option to update your url (not sure 100%) check out google webmaster tools before you do anything.

If you have all static pages then you can use 301 redirect. This way you will only have temporary loss of serp. if you change your domain name you will loose all your backlinks.

Changing the URL of the site changes all.

If your site ranking is on xyz and you want to change in abc then all will be gone as they are specific to xyz domain only.

If you are using the sub domain of xyz then things will be different.

Agree, changing in url may be or possible that your site reputation and ranking fall into the ground level and you have to start from the beginning. My opinion that you not have to change your url instead you can do changes on your website.

301 redirect will not transfer all the juice, but that's the best option you got.
I'll says don't change if it's not necessary.

I think you will lose your back links for sure. but by redirection, u can get the traffic that your old URL gets
