I couldn't even read the second site properly. Geez, this is bad. Does the forum not have moderators? Maybe they thought that lifting their spam rules might make the site popular and it all went horribly wrong? I have honestly never seen anything as bad as that. I'm speechless really.

Then I think it would be safe to say that the senior members of the site need to step in as well and help where they can to make sure we don't go that way. It would be disappointing to see that happen here. Especially when you tell me what they link to

There are tons of spammed and un moderated forums around, most with which google will ignore

I can't believe that people would take a chance such as this to try get their sites to rank higher. The last definition I had of a spammer was that it was someone that knew the system well enough to know how to manipulate it..... What I saw was someone that knew nothing about search engines and didn't think that they would either be penalized or banned for their actions. I know there must be tons of these sites around, ad it makes me sad to think that there are people genuinely trying their best to get a forum community off the ground and may not have the knowledge to combat people like this, and in a small amount of time, everything they've worked so hard for has been destroyed.

This is just an abandoned site that hasn't been cared for and all the spam is coming form the ton of automated scripts that are doing it...most of it probably by the same guys that are advertising here and on similar forums offering thousands of backlinks for a couple of bucks... so think about it next time you consider their service.
This is interesting subject really, for example I have a Wordpress site that is few weeks old and right now I get on average one spam command a day - and those are not even obvious ones, but for an experts such as we are they can be easily spotted. The content is vague and they don't really say anything so they can be used on almost any kind of content. People who are inexperienced will probably let them be. I delete them regulary. Am I hypocritical when doing it and trying to use the same method to rank higher at the same time?
I just installed Comment Kahuna, and while it would allow me to do just that, I refuse to. I will use it to search for relevant blogs and post comments, but I will write each and every comment manually and do my best to actually provide useful information. Isn't information sharing what Internet is all about after all?
How does everyone else feel about this?

I have several blogs and admin/assistant admin on some forums that do not auto approve comments or registrations. The users of these scripts take several hours of my time a week. I suspect that many of the people doing this would not think of cutting in the checkout line at the market, but have not considered that they are doing much the same thing by using these spamming shortcuts on the Internet.

Riba, I get emails daily from people wanting to sell linkbuilding services. I have had a look at a few of them, and they all look mainly like link farms.

Have you noticed though, I did a search on Google yesterday for a funny advert, and in the search, in the sponsored listings, was a link that went to none other than a search page, a page with nothing but links and one liners.

Do you think this is ok? Or would it be just another link farm?

I'd say that a hefty potion of web is one big link farm today, just as the major part of email traffic is spam. I'm trying not to contribute to the noise too much.
Weird thing is that the "noise" seems to be working, otherwise no one would be generating it, right?

That's what I don't get though. I mean, Google, for one, update their algorithms and create new ones regularly to stop stuff like this happening, and yet, it still seems to work the best. I'm not sure if it will last though, not when their algos kick in properly. Look at sites that are considered content farms.

Now days when I search google for some exotic search terms I get no quality results like before, all I get is all variations of doorway pages intend to make some $ on ads or whatever.
And it is getting worst every day, I think that google knows that and they are trying to solve this problem, but I don't know their success rate, because they are eliminating hard working webmasters also and spammers will recreate their content farms within one day tweak it a little and they are back in the business.
So all I want to say that I'm not impress with the Google any more...
