My websites are losing links fast! Help!

I am worried about the backlinks created for my website. Two of my websites have an alarming dip in their graphs as shown on ahrefs website. And my rankings have also been affected badly. One of my websites managed to keep a steady graph of active backlinks up till 19 Apr 2013 while my second website was on a steady scale only till 12 Apr 2013. After that the journey continued downhill to a level which shows that I am now 5000 backlinks down from the last steady point.

Now I'm wondering, is there some kind of Google update that I am not aware about? What can be the reason for it? Has any one of you experienced the same?

If links to your website is decreasing, it indicates the websites where you built those links have expired or deleted. I don't think Google update has to do anything with it.

    Thumbs up

Joel is absolutely right. I agree. The question I have is how did you get that massive amount of backlinks? With that many links It could be that they were created by some type of software that creates and pings the links but the links have no substance to them and they dry up.

I am not sure.. but sometimes different tools have different backlinks to show. And they may have changed the algorithm for scanning your backlinks. So it may be possible that the backlink is still present there, but the tool has stopped showing it as backlink.

I noticed I lost a bunch of backlinks to one of my sites to. I only lost about 80 those 80 though were created by a free backlink tool I used way before joining IMT. It was a rookie mistake and luckily it was not a massive amount and I can overcome it. Do your self a favor though and check out IMT tools they have a wiki and bookmark tool that is very cheap. If your not into doing it yourself, maybe you dont understand it or have time or maybe the English is hard (I have trouble myself and it's my native tongue!) then get with Joel.Gaskett he is a forum user that has a backlink package that he manually submits! You can't go wrong with that.

Which tool do you use to check backlink of your site. There are lots of tools available online which does not tell exact links of your site. So in my opinion you should use Google webmaster tool to see what are the exact backlink of your site.

If you think about it: Link Decay is rather normal. Sites come and go. Domains don't get renewed. Domains get resold and repurposed.

In the MAJORITY of cases, you'll lose low-quality links 10-20 times faster than you'll lose truly high quality ones. So in some ways your 'worst' links will largely obliterate themselves over time, and only the most permanent and hopefully high PR and authoritative links will remain.

Be prudent with Backlink Indexing services by the way -- they may give a _temporary_ boost -- but you'll often find the links they do create are very transient and VANISH in short order as other people's links replace yours. They cause rapid spikes in link Discovery - and link Loss on the backside.

sounds like they were bulk links from a spam or bulk service that has now expired...

you need to start building links again but choose a different source one that is safe and steady.. don't over do it because what has happened to your rankings is normal when the links drop like that..

the good news! you can bounce back from it, take the above advice and in a month you will see your rankings level off and they slowly start to climb back... patience is key here..

    good luck!

If your link was on a site that has expired so your link has also died.
If your link was just only a link without content then the owner of the site might have deleted it to make his more strong in terms of content.
If your link came as the result of buying links and the service has expired then the service provider might have removed your links.
If your link was on a site that is in the process of removing all bad outbound links then your link might have been removed.

This is how your links might have been removed and Google has nothing to do in this. All you can do is create more quality backlinks and this time do not use free tools to create free and useless backlinks.
