it might be possible that those site goes direct visit.... and it has good content.... Generally Google believe in Good and unique content....
It's not always about the backlinks or high PR.. Take a look at your competitor's site as a whole. Content? Do they have ads up on their website? Take a look at how old the domain is as well and is it a blog, etc
Not all backlinks can be indexed quickly, maybe your competitors have a quality backlink. Or try to analyze your competitors SEO onpage, may are good rank because good onpage SEO and quality content...
There are many factors to take into consideration, like the age of the domain, the amount of content on the site, large sites normally will have better ranking, the links they have could be of high quality like high PR links which will definitely help in the serps if you are getting high PR backlinks, which are follow.
