How do I get a PDF file rank? Do I build backlinks to it too?

If the PDF is on a download page on your site, I would think you would yes. linking to it from your site pages as well as backlinking to it from external websites.

you can place couple of back-links to your pdf file which you have hosted int he website. this will help you to rank it in the search engines.

a friend of mine did the same and got it indexed & ranked by Google.

Similar to a web page optimization, you can optimize your pdf file. Build backlinks for the web page which contains link to the pdf file. Make sure to have text based pdf file. As much as possible upload the pdf file close to your root directory.

As far as I know search engine spiders can't read content on PDF files. So the best way to promote those is using a HTML page with link to the PDF.

PDF optimization is as similar to other content optimization.
A few tips,
- Add targeted keywords
- Add backlinks in the text
- Add anchor text
- Avoid raster graphics
