With the recent updates in the Google, I noticed that my detailed blog comments were crawled and given back-links. Other comments that just described the topic within the blog were not picked up by the crawlers. Is my assumption right?

Google crawls the whole content on the web page, no matter its detailed comment or just one word comment.
You are getting the backlinks from the blog because the backlinks are dofollow.
Many blogs are nofollow blogs, commenting on such blog will never give you any backlinkg credit no matter how valuable your comment is.
Internet Marketing lessons from Big Brands. Guest bloggers welcome
True, but with Panda making the rounds, more elaborate comments, or what is also called quality comments, are more appreciated. Panda is out there for one reason only, to find low quality content and axe it. If your comments are keyword stuffed, short or generally not really classified as a quality comments, its gna be more harm than good for your site. With comments on blogs etc. its also good to have quality content. Yea, nofollow blogs don't give you the link juice you need, but if you have a quality comment on a do follow blog, it is worth it. Tempering your comments and blogs just because some blogs don't give you the link you want is not really the way to go. Targeting only dofollow blogs is frowned upon by some IM's and SEO's because they believe that you need a good balance between do follow and nofollow.. I'm still trying to figure that one out if anyone knows why this is let me know?

i've experienced that situation to. When i check certain keyword from my blog that being indexed in google, surprisingly it come from blog comments, not from my contents. So if someone wrote a quality comments, chances that keyword from the comments being indexed is high too
