Thread: PR and manual intervention

Some thought has been in the back of my mind for a while.

When google assigns PR to a site is there any manual intervention. (like some one actually looking at the site) ?

In some circumstances, I believe that manual intervention is certainly made (in the case of some penalties).

But, as a general rule, I would say that the answer is no.

Considering there's literally millions of websites, I would guess that anything under a Pagerank 7 or 8 is ALL done electronically whereas some sites that are PR9/10 which are only a few hundred at best may have some manual work done.

This is correct. Google has designed a pretty complicated system so they basically don't have to do anything manually.

No chance, I'd say, there are billions of web pages, Google employees are highly paid (over $100,000) a year and you think they are going to have someone manually look at each page of your site? They'd go broke doing that, can't even do that for 0.1% of all pages out there. Algorithm determinate it, unless a site is reported for violation of guideline, then there might be someone taking a look, otherwise, no.

as far as i'm concern, google would take any action only if someone reported about the violation.. if not, do they really care of billion or trillion website ever exist on the net?

I can't see that being the case. The amount of sites that are updated in the PR updates would take a very, very long time to update manually. It would take a lot of people to look at the sites, analyse and then consider how much their pagerank should rise or fall.

Google does update their algorithm manually. Everything else is automatic.

Google's advanced crawlers scan websites in phases.
Domain name, title, description, meta, headings, bolded text, link text, and at some point it scans your content step by step.
The more relevance between all of the above, the better your ranking will be depending on your backlinks.
If the backlinks come from relevant websites (always try to get these links...) your ranking will go up more...etc.

I bet if there are websites violating google's "rules" the admins will be notified by some automated system after the crawlers detect something "out of order".
Then most likely they'll have to apply the penalty manually (unindex urls, remove rank, etc.).
