I had used it long back so can't say about current scenario. But at that time it wasn't worked well. If you want to go for paid ads then Adwords is the best option as it helps to convert with closely targeted audience.

Adwords only for paid ads because conversion in Adwords is better than other options. I have neither heard nor read anywhere anyone saying that ads on Stumbleupon give better conversion than Adwords.

I've recently used adwords for one of my sites and I can say it is pure waste of money these days, all 500 clicks ordered where boots, I tested it in few days and always the same story. Same browser same OS and same resolution, country is different and IP.
Go figure, same thing was happening to me with FB ads(you can find my thread about it in here), so I don't trust anyone anymore until I test it first.

I never even knew stumbleupon had an ad platform like that. I suppose it makes sense though, since many people get traffic through StumbeUpon, so maybe they just wanted to make some extra money from it. I don't blame them. I'm for sure going to check this out, seems promising.

Stumbleupon ads is good! You should post awesome content on your site and don't drive the traffic to your sales page. Instead use the traffic to build your list. And if your content is good enough, you can get much social signals not only from Stumbleupon, but also from other social media. You may also get some quality backlinks too.

So if you try to sell, no it does not convert well. If you try to build your list, yes it converts.
