The costs involved for vbulletin are worth the software. SMF is good enough to implement forums and works. It's just the features are different.

If you are looking for a free open script forum script check out phpBB • Free and Open Source Forum Software. That is what I used when I had a forum. At that time it was the best free set up. I have not had a forum for a couple years now though.

i have used simple machine forum in the past.. my experience was better with them... its esier to customize smf then phpbb. As phpbb requires manual mod installation, while smf has a automated system.
