    What works better?

I have an e-commerce website, and I am creating a blog. I am debating on the structure. I don't know if I should create a separate blog (mysitesblog.com) or a blog inside my website (blog.mysite.com) In your opinion, what is better and why?

Keep in mind that a separate blog can link to my website creating additional link juice by marketing both simultaneously, and a blog inside my website will add original content to my website and additional link juice from blog directories.

Does anyone have experience doing both?

In my opinion, I'd run it as a subdomain (blog.mysite.com), as it will add more weight in terms of internal linking rather than from an external site pointing at your main shop site.

Maybe try both though, create some buffer sites on WordPress for different keywords (probably your categories of whatever you're selling) and have blog posts about each item with direct links. You could hire someone to add articles to a separate WP site, as well as having your own blog on the main website. Remember though, that the external sites will need promotion in the same way, so it's more work. SEnuke X could help you out here though with the account creation.

I can't really answer your question, but the way you have blog.mysite.com written it is a sub-domain. In most ways a sub-domain is treated as a separate domain, not much different from mysiteblog.com (think of all the blogger blogs - myblog.blogger.com). You will need a separate robots.txt file and I believe you can use a different favicon than the main site. A blog within your site would be mysite.com/blog/. To get the benefits you list you would probably need a separate hosting account or a dedicated IP for the mysiteblog.com blog. If you set it up in a shared hosting account it will have the same IP address as the main site. I do see some links show up in webmaster tools from different domains hosted in my shared account server space, though.

That is a good idea. Thanks. For now, it is just me, so it will take some time to do both. As soon as I am making enough $$ I will start to outsource.

Really? I thought a sub domain was treated as part of the domain. You learn something new everyday.
I already have a separate host set up, so it would be easy to just create a blog on it. My main concern is that I need to maximize my marketing efforts.

I have seen many companies, websites, business websites, shopping websites creating blogs on the sub domain of the main domain and they provide updated information to inform the users what is new with the site, it helps a lot to the site visitors in understanding what is the future of the site, you may use the same concept as well.

So let me as you both, what about blog.mysite.com vs mysite.com/blog. As Wink0r pointed out, blog.mysite.com is treated as an external site. Would you recommend an internal blog over that?

There are no negative effects that I know of. I just wanted to know what will be better out of the two.

There will be 1 problem. i will be 100 times harder for seo. Becuase google does not like sub domains of sites. Now you will proably say what about blogspot and other sites like that. It is because the primary domain is super powerful . I would put it on separate domain if i was you.

It's good if you create a sub domain for your blog it will effect on your visibility. You have to work on SEO to get the better visibility on search engine.

It will be easier to rank if not on a subdomain

Thanks for your input, Fred. What about building it inside the website? You would suggest to have it on a separate domain over creating it within the website (mysite.com/blog)?

this would be good if you create mysite.com/blog because the SEO value is higher than blog.mysite.com

Also, display your blog link on the home page where visitors can see easily.

MaryP just recommended the way I know to do blogs which is mysite.com/blog so it's not a sub domain as the SEO value all goes to boost your domain. However, if there's any reason your blog is not directly part of your website, i.e. completely off topic of your website and you forsee splitting the blog someday from the website, then make your blog a completely seperate domain. Otherwise what MaryP suggests is what I've always done.

I'd choose to run it as /blog as well. Adding more content to your blog means adding more content to your site, and because they are internal links you spread the juice within the entire site. External links devalue and become diluted. If you get a lot of actions on the blog -- ping backs, link backs, feed subscribers, then you end up raising authority for the entire site. Separate domains should be left to funnel site building, not as a part of your main site navigation. Just my humble opinion.

PS... Ping sites see them easier when setup this way as well

please do not sub.domain it... big G doesn't like that.

if you don't want to spend money you can add as a new page yoursite.com\blog or buy a new related domain (like a .info very cheap)

Well, a blog gives benefit only if it is made inside a blog such blog.mysite.com or mysite.com/blog instead of having a separate blog because a blog helps to add new and fresh content to a site and it can only be done by creating a blog inside your site instead of creating a separate blog.
