What makes a good IM? Ethics, skill, training?

What do you think? Is it about training, skill, talent, your ethics?

What would you do if you had to chose an IM to promote your business, what would you look for? I know everyone here does their own IM, myself included, but I want to find out what makes an IM the best. Maybe it will help me, and anyone else reading this post to broaden their skills.

I would say that having the skills in place is obviously critical. It doesn't matter if you try to be ethical if you don't have the skills to back it up.

Honesty's also important. Making big claims to clients won't do you any favours in the long run.

Searchsouth, I definitely agree that you need skill, honesty etc. In the end that is what distinguishes you from every other IM around IMO. You need to level with clients and tell them what you can and cannot do. That way there are no high expectations from clients that you cannot fulfill.

Fred, are you talking about a client list? I can see that your client listing is important as it builds your reputation, but I still think that to get that rep, you need to have the skills, ethics or training.

There I would agree. You definitely need to understand the area you are trying to promote in, how people interact around the web, and not only in your niche, as well as knowing where all your potential customers come together.

I'd say determination is key. If you're not determined to develop new skill sets, train yourself harder and not only want but NEED to succeed then you will win. I've been in the unenviable position of NEEDING to succeed and it's truly amazing how you can push yourself when it's needed. I never want to get to that situation again of needing to succeed, I simply use that determination to WANT to succeed, which is ultimately the better way.

I think that is important as well yes. It's one of the reasons many new IM's fail. They believe that it is easy and that they can do it all immediately and they would then get rich quick overnight. When that doesn't happen they decide to try something else.

Determination and hard work is definitely something you need. However, without some basic knowledge and proper marketing strategies you won't go anywhere.

There's a big difference between "opportunity junkies" (who keep struggling) and real entrepreneurs (who WILL become successful).

True. I recently started studying again, and was amazed to see how much actually still links to marketing as a whole. It's interesting to see how business growth can be affected by something like the right marketing strategy, or product evaluations etc. Do you think that maybe IM's can benefit from not just Im skills, but a general background in marketing as well?

A marketing background would help, but then you'd still have to find the right strategy for whatever you're doing and for what you want to accomplish. Everyone can learn marketing strategies and implement the appropriate ones for their own business. Set your goal and apply the right strategies to achieve it.

Definitely. I just somehow feel that the extra knowledge learnt from marketing can help you build a better strategy. If you either create your own products and services, or decide to market someone else's, having knowledge about things like product evaluations and the many ways it can be used, can help you build a stronger campaign and could leader to greater success. I believe that a marketing background can actually teach you how to create the right strategy, because not all products and services are marketed the same way.

I agree, but still...everyone can learn about marketing. The "must-do's" and "absolutely-don'ts". A tip for starting online entreprenuers would be to just study other (successful) marketers out there and I'm sure they'll recognize patterns and a main concept. The more you do, the more you learn to get it right, the stronger your campaigns will be.

Everyone makes mistakes and everyone learns from them. You have to start somewhere and you shouldn't expect to get everything right the first time. I mentioned it before: even the most successful marketers out there started with trial and error. They only became successful because of it...after a few years mostly.

So experience then also plays an important role. I can understand that, because where most people tend to hire what they can afford, large companies would go for the best because they can afford it. I have seen many IM's that have more skill than some of the big guns out there. More IM sense, so to speak.

Very true. When you're already making a good income it's only wise to outsource what you don't like to do or what others can do better in less time. When you can take this step you can grow your business faster and finish projects in a shorter time, which means more revenue and higher profits. This way you'll be able to break free from your business and live the life you want, while others do the work. But that's only a dream to most internet marketers (not unreachable though).

I've read a very nice example on this subject:
The iPhone - Apple designed it, but NOTHING inside it is from Apple. It's built from components of many companies that are specialized in a certain area.

It's the same with more than one car as well. Different parts of it are manufactured in different parts of the world. Outsourcing and all that jazz doesn't really do anything except lighten your load though, it doesn't help measure how good you are as an IM.

I think perhaps what makes you good as an IM'er is your exposure, your followers and a LOT of luck (depending on your market).
As you said...there are marketers out there who have no clue, but make loads of cash every month.

What helps to make you a good IM'er is proper knowledge and a lot of digging into your market.
Being part of your market as "your own prospect" will help you understand your market and what they desire.
Once you know that it's a lot easier to be a good IM'er, but mainly in YOUR market.

If you would ask yourself "What is a good Internet Marketer ?", what would you answer ?
It's difficult to say. The successful ones are good because of experience and a complete business team behind them with expertise.

Also true, but many IM's outsource as well, so they do have a team to work with, it just depends on the team I'd say. And confidence as well. (almost forgot that) Without a certain level of confidence, you wouldn't get far because you are going to constantly worry about upsetting someone or ruining the client - IM relationship.

I'll have to leave it like this for now I have a business growth exam to write and I need to get cramming... - Edit, I passed the exam with an exam total of 100%. (yay)

I would say it is all skills and discipline (discipline in the sense working regularly, sticking with what you have planed to do) and skill shows that you have learned it and you have confident to it.

True, these are important traits for any IM to have. OK looking at skill and training, how far would you go if you had to study IM. I love learning and read just about anything I can get my hands on, both the good and the bad, so that I can make my own opinions and learn by doing. If you want to be the best of the best of the best (), what would you do, and how far would you go, certification, diplomas, degrees in marketing? and do you think that would help?
