I am agreed with jalanbk that one must be cautious too while submitting articles in article directories and especially Google Panda update is severely penalizing duplicate and thin content therefore, in my opinion submitting only unique and useful content is effective strategy for improving the ranking of a site.

If article marketing were dead, Google simply would change their algo to devalue article links. But instead, what they told us was that article marketing is here to stay and so terribly important that they need clearer signals. The most clear signals are those that have the most value to the search experience. Usefulness, measured by interactivity, sharing, time on page, etc. When you spin an article and no one interacts with it, no one shares it, and people bounce off it very quickly, the search engines see this content as it is of no value and refuse to index it. Your time was wasted. Moreover, with Google's new authority measure per Author, you could be damaging every piece of content in your name wherever it appears on the web. Shorter artcile does not mean that less than 400 words but it should be concise. The selection of words and topics should be fresh and on current issues. You should also keep in view that provide sufficient information to readers. They who do not keep in mind these things, can not run for long time.

Panda seems to care about duplicate and spun articles. When you publish your article and someone copy it on spammy website.
When you update your article it becomes duplicate as well. If you have too many, google will strike on your website.

Write unique article content, then include link to your site. 2. submit your article content in high PR and dofollow article site. 3. online visitors read your articles on internet and click the link and visit your website. So article submission is use for get quality backlink and also increase online traffic.

I found ezine 400 words sometime hard to do but as long as it is original and interesting they are great. Though I must admit easier to write shorter articles.
