Thread: My views on IM

I believe that approaching Internet Marketing with the right attitude and tools are essential. The way Search engines today amp up their algos to catch black hat users and spammers are increasing and, in my opinion, making the web a better place for the rest of us.

Sure, it's making things harder for everyone to rank well etc. But I have a few long standing beliefs that work really well for me, and I will tell you why.

When I first got into IM, I knew the basics, and believe me, that wasn't nearly enough. But that doesn't mean that you have to run to the first self proclaimed SEO expert to do all the work for you. I have a knack to learn new things by teaching myself. Either by doing, or by reading. So here are a few of my processes that you can use a tips when you start out on your own IM journey.

No one is an expert / guru. Yea, I know a few can argue here, but think about it. IM is not a fixed sector of marketing, or any other business sector. I can guarantee you that 90 if not 100% of all internet marketers still learn something everyday. They may have a wealth of knowledge that makes them an authority, but in context, the word expert means to know it all, am I right?

READ. Seriously, read everything you can get your hands on. Blogs, articles, free study material, anything about internet marketing you can find, read it and take notes.

Find your own style. Try out the techniques you've read about, implement them and then tweak them until you're happy with what you see.

Be open and honest. Sounds lame, but hear me out. If you decide to take the route of the spammer or black hat operator, what are you saying about yourself and the companies you represent... " I do what I can to make it to the top, and I don't care how its done". How far will that get you? And what about the companies you work with? I've said it so many times before, you reap what you sow. Karma has an uncanny knack of biting you in the rear when you least expect it. Being open and honest with people,really works well. Getting them to believe in a product or service without scamming them into buying the latest things they'll never really need... It's an art form, but really doable.

Make your plans, and stick to them as best you can. IM changes so much that no plan can truly remain unaltered. Realize that you need to be flexible and be able to change as the tide does. ( as Bruce Lee says "be water my friend").

Be patient. Seriously, Rome wasn't built in a day, but it can certainly be destroyed in a day. If you try get a site to rank in the coveted first page in a week, you're going to burn your fingers. I think that when I log into my webmaster's account and see that I have no messages from Google is proof that I am working within the proper guidelines.

Quality wins over quantity any day. Whether you're working with forums, blogs, articles, web sites, podcasts, videos... It's always better to have quality than quantity. Quality says more about a business than quantity does. Even when you work with back links.

Anything that sounds too good to be true, generally is. Be careful of that. I get emails in my Junk box daily offering to boost my site stats, visitors and conversions. Nine times out of ten you get someone scamming you to buy a product that ends up with you and the companies you work with on Google banned list. True, you do get a few good ideas from a few emails, but read everything carefully before you make a decision.

Now, let me tell you why I use these "processes" when I work. I started working with a site 3 or 4 months ago. An aged domain yes, but one that had very little back links, very little visitors and generally needed a boost to get going. It now ranks for the company name, ranks for almost 80% of its niche keywords within the first 3 pages of Google. Every victory was done the natural way, organically and without the use of any dodgy techniques. Which is proof that, in the long run, doing things the right way ( and by this I mean not spamming or using black hat techniques) really does benefit you and your projects more. I consider that a small victory for myself and the company I work with.

I am no expert, and by no means an authority, but maybe these tips can help other people from turning into black hatters and spammers as a last resort.

Spamming must be considered as a crime and that is the only way we can stop it.

One can only hope. With everything going on in the world of IM and SEO nowdays, spammers and black hatters' days are numbered. True though, you will get the few that will find ways around it, but the days of having your email overwhelmed with spam and watching spam listings rank on Google are at an end. it's better to try "convert" or try stop newbies from resorting to these methods before its too late and they destroy their online careers.

Agreed. If these methods are destroyed now, newbies will never get to know about BH methods and they will go towards WH methods. But if BH methods keep getting more and more popular, the whole Internet would get spammed and sadly, every WH marketer will have to turn it BH marketer and then after few years Internet will shut down. :P

Let's hope it never gets to that. For now, I cannot imagine a world without the internet. Although I would definitely get more time to spend on my art, lol which unfortunately is digital
