Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a series of tactics aimed at increasing your website’s visibility in search engine results – essentially, improving your chances of being found when patients are searching for the treatments and services you offer. A combination of on-site and off-site factors, the goal of any SEO campaign is to drive high-quality traffic to your website, outrank the competition and win new patients.

Search engine marketing - Also known as sponsored listings, Search Engine Marketing (SEM) involves the placement of targeted advertisements in a user's search engine results. Based on a bidding system, your paid ads will be only visible to users who meet certain location and demographic criteria. Because you only pay when visitors click on your ad, SEM advertising is one of today's most efficient marketing strategies.

Social Media Marketing (SMM) is an important way for medical practices to reach their current as well as potential patients. Having an active social media presence has become an invaluable part of expanding your reach and establishing trust on the Web. An active Facebook, Twitter and Google+ allows you to build your own reputation and brand, establishing a relationship with patients and setting your practice apart from the competition.

I think that they are both crucial if you use them simultaneously, they complement each other. You should be consistent, and that's when you'll see the results..

SEO is a technique which helps search engines find and rank your site higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search query. SEO thus helps you get traffic from search engines.
While SMO stands for social media optimization. It uses social media to increase traffic to a website. It is paid SEO technique.

One of the main differences in practice is how easy it is to up-scale.

Using paid marketing (either SMM or paid-traffic), once you've tested and found a profitable funnel, it is usually very easy to up-scale rapidly and effectively by simply re-investing some of the profits in buying more ads or traffic.

But SEO is typically long-term, so not easy to up-scale quickly, although there are some exceptions, for example guest-blogging, if you can outsource the process then it should be easy to up-scale, and can work very well.

So think carefully what you are hoping to achieve, and what resources you have.

Most people underestimate the budget needed for effective testing of something like SMM (or paid traffic). One factor is that random events are a lot more clustered than people imagine, so a good rule-of-thumb is that you need to spend 4 times as much as your potential profit, for EACH test. So, for example, if you are trying to get $250 payments from an installment-loan CPA offer, you need to spend $1000 for each test, before you really know whether it is profitable or not, then you change one word (which can double or halve your conversions) and that's another test. Even the experts don't know what will work best, they can make good guesses, but they understand that they typically need to do a LOT of testing before they find a profitable funnel, and can then rapidly up-scale.

SEO is optimizing your blog or website for the search engines such as Google and Bing. This will lead the search engine users to your site.

SMM, social media marketing, is creating a presence on social media. Basically you have to post consistently and build a following on social media to get good traffic.

Ultimate goal of Both is to increase visibility in search engine. SEO is a process/mechanism which goal get ranked on SERP's by optimising website through various on page techniques and also by use of off page link building to get trust and more visibility in search engine.
SMM is a marketing process by which we get high exposure on serp by buying adspace insttead of getting high serp normally. it also has both paid search advertising and free traffic.

I agree with you. SEO is a complex process I think, there are loads of things we need to complete especially in a short-term. In contrast, SMM quickly get more traffic and increase SERP position however need to have some money spent.
