Thread: How would you promote a news site?

I've started a technology news site which updates the news as it breaks publishing news ahead of competitors. But articles is not only a thing. Problem is the promotion.

Any IMT members with promoting news website?

Please don't just say use social new, work and bla bla. I know that. I just need a deep detail on how would you promote the tech news site.

just make sure the content is updated often, specially for a news site, try to update it everyday, easiest way to do so is whit a automatic posting plugin if you use wordpress for your site, i use wp-ematico, for updating my sites on autopilot, all you have to do is look for rss feeds in your niche, and push a button, on one of my sites i get up to 100 articles at once. Great!!! for seo. next, ad some great seo plugins, sitemap maker and such. Add an rss feed, so people can find your site trough rss's. This is a great way to get search engine traffic, off course you can try social media marketing, or embedd it in your site some way, like the shareaholic sharing buttons and such. Or promote your site, trough facebook, twitter, pinterest and such.

Okay, first of all, I'm NOT running an 'autopilot' site and I don't want to do that. I'm running a NEWS site (which I know of course I've to update frequently with news) that I try to give update to date informations before any other site post on that particular topic. In fact, I want to establish a brand. I've even hired some people to report the news as it happens as fast as possible. I think that's how it works.

But it's not about the content, what I'm asking is the promotion technique. I've even tried Facebook ad campaign, but as I'm not expertised with Facebook marketing, I failed. So if you have special skill in facebook marketing then you could share it.

BTW, you suggested to pull content from other's site for 'updating site in autopilot'. That's stealing (IMHO) and I think Google doesn't like it, but you mentioned that 'This is a great way to get search engine traffic' which doesn't make sense.

I might not have understood in some way. If it is so, you're welcome to clear my doubts off.

why not first make use of the rss sumitter right here, it send about 10 links to all the urls per submission all at once even if they are hundred of them by converting it to one single feed, just do this each day you will see result that is what i do myself. apart from that, another thing you need do is to get yourself a tool such as the "google serach engine ranker", in fact u need this it all in on SEO tool that will help submitting your site to social booking directories, social networking, article directories, commenting blogs wikki sites, web2.0 sits, video and image directories. i think this is what you need now but before then you can make use of the rss submitter too right here in this forum

If your running a legit News site, then submit it to Google News. That should get you plenty of traffic.

i have same problem like yours, anup. and it's make me so confuse how to promoting my new site. I think i'll stay on this thread, who's know i'll find out the way.

You definitely need to be doing press releases if you are not. They can bring you some powerful traffic.

promoting a news site is very difficult if you are new to the market as there are many big players who can overshadow your website to stay in the market you need to work rigorously on making domain authority and targeting common phrase will help with a regular update. Also add news meta tags for Google to understand that this is a news website for quick indexing.

Social media would probably be the best way, unless you got accepted into Google News. Just be sure to write headlines that are a bit different than the traditional boring stories others are telling, take a different angle

I would like to suggest for social media optimization. This is the best method to promote a website. Create profiles on different social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, StumbleUpon etc and share your services information and contents on, so that more and more visitors can see your post. It will enhance your targeted traffic as well as customers.

One more thing is you must at least promote one infographic and at least one video having your site related information. Google has sent you targeted traffic, but it mainly depends on your promoting contents.

anupviews, have you started a FB page yet? You could start one if not already, share news from your site to your FB page and create ads with some of the bigger more controversial stories for likes. If people like the stories and share them, more people will like and follow your page which in turn send some of them to your site.

Another idea would be to contact some bloggers that are writing on some of the stories, offer to see if they would be interested in writing an editorial for your news site. They will promote their story on their blog sending readers to your site to check it out.

Tips to promote news are as follows-
Post quality feed
Update regularly.
Don't copy from others site.
Make your content quality one.

why not check what you competitors are doing? I am not talking about huge competitors like mashable or theverge....but I am sure you have some small competitors who's strategy you can spy and replicate

USe off page and On page SEO Tools ......

Promoting a news website is matters to money. If our budget is good enough we can directly go for Television and hording banners with brand ambassadors. But in my view off page optimization helps to good, and it is organic also.

Twitter is the best way to promote the news site. Along with stumble and delicious can be of great help.
